Press Release: Hawk Nelson Frontman Jason Dunn Departing For Solo Project

BIG news in the Christian music industry today... Jason Dunn, frontman for Hawk Nelson, is stepping down from the band to work on his solo project Lights Go Down! Here's the official press release below. What are you thoughts on this?

(NASHVILLE, Tennessee) -- After nearly a decade with Christian rock band Hawk Nelson, frontman and founding member Jason Dunn will depart the GRAMMY® and Dove Award nominated group on May 15th. Dunn plans to release his first solo project under the name Lights Go Down later this year.

Dunn spent the last few months recording at Profile Studios in Vancouver, B.C., with RIAA Gold-accredited record producer Steve Kravac (Blink 182, MxPx, Less Than Jake). Tentatively titled Abandon Progress, information about the album’s release date and label and distribution plans are forthcoming.

Hailing from Ontario, Canada, Hawk Nelson signed to Tooth and Nail Records in 2004, and to date have recorded 5 full-length albums selling in excess of 600,000 units. A compilation album, The Songs You’ve Already Heard: Best of Hawk Nelson, is scheduled for release on March 27, 2012.

"I will miss playing music on stage with my friends, but really looking forward to the future with Lights Go Down,” says Dunn. “I wish Hawk Nelson the very best with their future endeavors."

Devotional: You Need Only Be Still

Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly. And he said, "Listen, all you of Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat! Thus says the LORD to you: 'Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God's. Tomorrow go down against them. They will surely come up by the Ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the brook before the Wilderness of Jeruel. You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the LORD, who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem!' Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the LORD is with you." -- 2 Chornicles 20:14-17

I absolutely love this passage of Scripture! I came across it accidentally, as a cross-reference to another Scripture I was reading at the time, and it totally stood out to me. Let me summarize the story for you, and then I'll point out what God showed me through this Scripture.

Judah is really troubled, because King Jehoshaphat has just received word that the people of Moab, Ammon, and Mount Seir are rising up against them. "A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea, from Syria; and they are in Hazazon Tamar," one of the messengers tells the king. Well, as you can imagine, the king is fearful, so he goes and seeks the Lord. Judah fasts and seeks His guidance in the situation. Here's verses 9- 12:

"Are You not our God, who drove out the inhabitants of this land before Your people Israel, and gave it to the descendants of Abraham Your friend forever? And they dwell in it, and have built You a sanctuary in it for Your name, saying, 'If disaster comes upon us-sword, judgment, pestilence, or famine-we will stand before this temple and in Your presence (for Your name is in this temple), and cry out to You in our affliction, and You will hear and save.' And now, here are the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir-whom You would not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them and did not destroy them- here they are, rewarding us by coming to throw us out of Your possession which You have given us to inherit. O our God, will You not judge them? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You."

This is when the Spirit of the Lord comes upon Jahaziel, who says that the battle is the Lord's, and they won't even need to fight. "Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord," he says. So they stand and worship God with loud voices. The next morning they woke up early, and appointed those who would sing praises. Others worshiped the beauty of God's holiness, saying, "Praise the LORD, for His mercy endures forever." An amazing thing happens! The three peoples that had come up against Judah suddenly start killing and ambushing one another! First, the people of Moab and Ammon cut off the people of Mount Seir, and then they finally start killing one another. Not one escaped, it tells us. When King Jehoshaphat and his army came to gather the spoils, there was so much, it took them three days to carry it all away! They continued to praise God for all He had done for them, and because of Jehoshaphat's obedience to God, God gave him a restful reign over the house of Judah.

I'd encourage you to read 2 Chronicles for yourself this week. There are so many things we can learn from this chapter, but let me pick out a few things. Firstly, when fear struck King Jehoshaphat, what did he do? The first thing he did was brought His troubles before the Lord with fasting and prayer. Then, He reminded God of His faithfulness in other times and trouble, and then pleaded for deliverance again. I love this, because it makes it clear throughout the New Testament, that this is exactly how God wants us to be today! Here's Philippians 4:6-7

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

So when you feel anxious? Bring it to God, tell Him what you need, and thank Him for His goodness! Then His peace will guard your heart. Never start complaining or running your mouth, because that will only make you feel more anxious. Cast your care upon the Lord, for He cares for you!

Then, when the Spirit of the Lord comes upon Jahaziel, he says for them to stand STILL and see the salvation of the Lord. They didn't have to do anything! You know those times when we have so much turmoil going on in our lives, that we seek God about it, demand an answer and then go ahead and do something without His guidance, because it seems He's silent? I know I've done this more than once, but here's the deal: Wait! I know it seems so hard, like waiting is the hardest thing on planet earth at this time in your life, but God's promises for waiting are overabundant. Isaiah 40:31 says, "But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint." Psalm 27:14 says, "Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD!" Those are just two out of the hat, but realize that when God asks you to wait and stand still to see His salvation, He will strengthen your heart and give you His peace in waiting. So when you feel like you need that answer now and God's asking you to wait, ask Him to strengthen your heart for the answer and give you His peace! It's His will, and we know that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, we know that we have whatever we ask for! That's a 1 John 5:14-15 paraphrase. :)

And lastly, the power of praise! That's what this story highlights to me. When life is crashing down around you, start to sing songs to Him. Start speaking His word into your situation, start to pray and intercede for God's will to be done in your life as it is in heaven. Let praise become a normal part of your life, because God is enthroned on your praises (Psalm 22:3)!

When we learn to praise God, surrender our problems to Him, thank Him for His promises and all the times He has already been good to us, and wait for His salvation, instead of taking matters into our own hands, we will see Him do the impossible for us. Just like he caused a whole multitude to fall by its own hands, He will cause the impossible to happen in our own lives. The life of surrender to God is indeed an exciting one!

Starfield: The Kingdom Review

If you’ve been a fan of Christian music for a few years, you’ve probably heard of Starfield. The Sparrow Records band released a handful of critically acclaimed, award-winning albums. Among the many singles the band has released, “I Will Go” probably stands out the most, with “Reign In Us,” “Hosanna,” “Glory is Rising,” and “Son of God” also helping Starfield make a name for themselves. But now, after 12 long years, Starfield is now venturing out on their own with The Kingdom, a ten-track independent project.

Starfield hopes to move the listener through their new album. As lead singer Tim Neufeld shared, we all want to be part of a movement, but first we ourselves need to be moved. The Kingdom from Starfield hopes to lead the listener toward God in an act of surrender toward Him.

Sounding much like Switchfoot, “Natural Disaster” opens the album speaking of the chaos that erupts when we fall away from our relationship with God. Lead guitar and overlapping vocals help make the opening track an excellent rocker! A bit slower, “Burn For You” is a prayer that God would fan the flames of our relationship with Him and cause us to burn with passion for His name. Lyrically, it’s a complete U-turn from the opening track, which is very cool.

With hand-clapping and acoustic guitar comes the title track, sounding much like a campfire sing-along. The revival sound is quite enjoyable, one that will most likely have the listener hitting repeat. The standout line from the chorus, “For the kingdom of our God carries on” will no doubt get stuck in the listener’s head as well. From the perspective of God, “Just Surrender” is serene, as we hear God speak over us, how He wants to heal our broken hearts and take away our fears if we simply surrender our lives to Him. It’s quite a heart-touching track.

“Heart and Flesh” is another phenomenal track, especially the heartfelt bridge that builds excellently: “And I am satisfied, oh I am satisfied in You!/ And I would trade it all for one day in Your courts.” Both musically and lyrically, the bridge is probably the greatest part of the entire album collectively. Following is Starfield’s cover of they hymn “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus,” and the guys add in a nice chorus, making for a great change.

“All I Want Is You” is a rocker, again sounding like an upbeat Switchfoot track, while “Innocence and Other Things Lost” is a haunting track speaking of being a soul in progress, as the band put it. The harmonious “Speak Now Jesus” portrays pure desperation, an utmost desire to hear Jesus speak into our souls – very relatable and beautiful. And lastly, the upbeat “Light of the World” is a prayer that God would shine His light through us into the dark world around us.

Starfield has definitely succeeded at moving their audience. The heart-felt songs of surrender, and admittance of how we need God for our every breath are very welcome. Amazing songs of worship, mixed with a handful of upbeat rockers make The Kingdom a fantastic project, one that will resonate with your spirit and encourage you in your walk with Christ.

Jon Bauer: Forevermore Review

Canadian worship leader Jon Bauer has recently enjoyed success. He has already released several projects to Canadian iTunes, and now Jon releases his U.S debut, a ten-track album titled Forevermore. Passion rings out in Forevermore, which already features a couple of hit songs and church anthems.

The upbeat and exciting “Our God” opens the album, speaking of how there is “no one like our God,” and sings of His attributes. It’s a great start for the album, followed by “Light of Another World.” A brilliant track, it speaks of longing for Heaven, and speaks of how justice reigns there, and the things we see here on earth help us to know that “we were made for another world.”

“Come and Save Us” brings to mind Chris Tomlin’s “Our God,” though this song is more upbeat and fun as it speaks of how God is our Savior and deliverer. Musically, it has a Revive sentiment, and it’s repetitive lyrics are sure to get stuck in your head in no time. The serene “Beautiful Name” with booming bass speaks of the simple answer that we can find in Jesus Christ, the beautiful Name. It is a contemplative track that offers much hope.

The single “Chasing After Me” is a fun but simultaneously worshipful duet with Laurrel Barker (whose vocals definitely added a ton!). It’s comparable musically to Francesca Battistelli’s “This is the Stuff,” speaking of how God’s love chases after us and captures us. The stronger “A Prayer Away” speaks of how we often feel like God is so far away, but we can find Him by simply uttering a prayer. This touching song with a powerful message is only made more enjoyable by the backing strings.

“Fall On Me” has a classic feel to it, a plea for God to pour His power over us, while the heartfelt and timeless “Forevermore” is a track that makes it easy to sense the presence of God in every word. A prayer that our life would be our worship service to God, “Life of Worship” follows, with nice guitar work and tambourines. Based on Romans 12, “Life of Worship” has to have some of the best lyrics I’ve ever heard in a worship song – so Scriptural and right on. The upbeat “Hosanna” follows, a wonderful song of exaltation to our God. And if you’re wondering if it’s a worship song you’ve heard before, yes! It’s a cover of the version made popular by Aaron Gillespie on his worship project. Though personally, I would have to say in all, I have enjoyed Jon Bauer’s version more thoroughly.

Forevermore is a magnificent worship project! I’ll definitely be looking forward to hearing more from this polished singer/songwriter. The Scripture-packed songs, the musical variety, and the worship experience derived from one listen is well worth the listen.

Andrew Greer: Angel Band - The Hymn Sessions Review

When you hear a timeless hymn, what enters your mind? For many, it’s thoughts of the moment we first encountered Christ. For Andrew Greer, respected singer/songwriter, that’s exactly what inspired his latest work Angel Band: The Hymns Sessions. The collaborative album lands Andrew singing duets with many talented vocalists that are some of Andrew’s personal influences, including Sonya Isaacs (from The Isaacs), Ginny Owens, Cindy Morgan, Sandra McCracken and more. This heavenly and inviting album shares through hymns the story of how Andrew found Christ’s love for him and lets the listener experience His love for themselves.

Opening the album with acoustic guitars and tambourines, the mellow “O Come Angel Band” features Sonya Isaacs and Laura Sue Brod. Though the female vocals are not easily audible, the passion of the vocal mix is, and Andrew’s soft vocals (much like Elias Dummer’s from The City Harmonic) are very engaging. “Never Grow Old” takes on more of an upbeat country sound, as the hymn paints a picture of longing for heaven. Regina McCrary (The McCrary Sisters) and Marc Scibilia add very nice backing vocals as well.

Very energetic and upbeat with a bluegrass tempo, “Down by the Riverside” features Julie Lee. Together, the duet covers the African-American spiritual very well, in a fun way. At this point, the listener should definitely be engaging along in worship with the eclectic covers offered through the Angel Band album. “Softly and Tenderly” follows, again a slower cover, but probably the best cover I have heard of this track yet. Sonya Isaacs again lends her backing vocals, making very heavenly harmonies.

“Jesus Paid It All” features the McCrary Sisters, as well as a second verse that Andrew himself wrote for the hymn. Though I didn’t particularly care for this track, you can’t argue that having the McCrary Sisters singing along with Andrew is a great listen. Banjos make up “The Lord’s Prayer,” a classic that was new to me personally, but actually goes back to 1935. This track is very short and sweet.

“In the Garden,” a favorite hymn of mine, is covered nicely in an unexpected swing tempo, keeping the simplicity of the track but adding fun measures here and there. A Fanny Crosby collaboration follows next, “I Am Thine O Lord/Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross.” As Andrew intended it to, it has a quirky touch to it, more on the mellow side and features vocals from Ginny Owens, fittingly.

The only original on the Angel Band project, “I’ve Been Searching,” written by Andrew as a tribute to the Gospel artists that inspire him, again features The McCrary Sisters with their supportive gospel vocals. This track also seems to sum up the reason Andrew recorded this project, showing that we can find what we are all searching for in Jesus. The bluegrass “The Unclouded Day” features Sandra McCracken, and Marc Scibilia again. It’s a fun track, but its lyrics are serious describing our longing to be home with Jesus where we belong.

The 1922 hymn “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus” was very welcome, featuring a new verse written by Andrew and sung by Cindy and her angelic vocals. Acoustic guitar makes up the track, very serene and prepares the album to come to a close. “All Creatures of Our God and King” closes the album, highlighted by the pipe organ played by Andrew’s mom who led him into a life of music in the first place. This worshipful hymn is an excellent closure for the album, as are Andrews vocals – together, simply blissful.

I’m definitely a hymns person. There’s something so timeless and heavenly about them and they always end leaving those listening or singing in an awe of the goodness of God. Angel Band: The Hymns Session by Andrew Greer is an awesome project, to say the least. The eclectic album is heavenly, peaceful, and fun to. If you’re looking for something out of the ordinary and passionate to add to your music library, this is definitely an album you’ll want to check out!

Tidewater: This Beautiful Life EP Review

Brett Allen, better known as Tidewater, has been making a name for himself ever since his self-published debut The Seas We Sail. After releasing a follow-up digital EP with major success (charting at iTunes Singer/songwriter chart at #4), Brett re-released his independent project with an added cover of “Christ is Risen,” originally performed by Matt Maher. Now signed, Brett returns with his Inpop Records debut, a three-song EP titled This Beautiful Life. Though it's short, it’s enough to show you what a polished singer/songwriter Brett actually is, and the listener will also be blown away to know that Brett did almost all the instruments by himself!

The powerful ballad “Not Just Any Love” immediately hits the listener with a sense of peace, as we are reminded of God’s unending love for us all. Honestly, it’s hard not to receive God’s love that penetrates through the speakers through the heart-felt lyrics: “It’s love, not just any love/ the love of the Father for His daughters and sons/ and no matter where you go, He’ll find you there…” More upbeat and fun, with more of a pop/rock twist, the title track single follows speaking of enjoying life, particularly Brett meeting his nephew for the first time. Closing the EP, overpowering strings and a quirky drumbeat help compose “Desire,” a mournful track despite its fun tempo. It speaks of how we often get lost in desires that hold us to the ground.

The This Beautiful Life EP by Tidewater is simply a masterpiece! Check out this EP and you will definitely be pumped up for the full-length album by the same name, to be released later this year. You will not want to miss Tidewater’s eclectic beats, deep lyrics, and enjoyable music!

I've been giving a lot of thought to this powerful verse lately. Do you ever have those times when you're going through a trial and you just wonder where God is? Sometimes you can even be tempted to wonder what you did to bring yourself into the trial. You try so hard not to give up, but you feel hopeless and alone sometimes. I think we've all felt this way before, but here's the truth. When we walk through the fire, the rivers, and the flames, God is still with us! In fact, He even promises to be with us through those things and further promises that the flames will not burn nor scorch us. (Does this bring to mind the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego?)

Deuteronomy 31:6 says, "Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you." God will never leave us nor forsake us, especially when things get hard. Here's James 1:2-4:

"My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing."

Trails in our life serve to make us stronger. Does this mean that God gives us the trials so we can be more like Him? No:

"Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning." (James 1:13-17)

See, God doesn't create trials to make us stronger, it's Satan. God is the author of all good things! We are tempted by our own desires and enticements that draw us away from the things of God; but when we choose God above the things our flesh wants, that's when we come closer to Him. Satan is the author of evil, it says is John 10:10, so he is the one trying to keep us from getting closer to God.

You may ask, "Then why doesn't God take us out of the trials?" Here's what I believe. God knows that the trials bring us closer to Him and, just like the story of Joseph, God will use what the enemy intended for evil for our good! Joseph was sold into slavery to the Egyptians, and then as a faithful servant was delivered to the dungeon under false accusations. But what happened next is he was made second in command over the entire country! He was able to save his family from starvation and death during the 7-years' plague. If he hadn't been in Egypt at the time, they surely would've died, but God used Joseph's trials to save his family. See how it works? It reminds me of Romans 8:28. I believe this Scripture is taken out of context too much, but here's what it says: "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." Not everything that happens to us is good -- in fact, in some cases, most of it seems to be bad! But for those called according to His purpose, we are promised that all the things that happen to us will WORK TOGETHER for good. It's not all good, but it fits together in a good way.

The point I'm trying to make is this: when trials come your way, don't be discouraged. They happen to all of us, and in fact, you should rejoice in your trials knowing that you're getting stronger and closer to God! Don't give up, because you can rest in the fact that He will never leave you nor forsake you, and when you walk through the waters, He will be there, and through the flame. What a wonderful God we serve!

David Crowder* Band: Give Us Rest Review

In May of last year, David Crowder* Band surprised their impressive fan base by announcing one final farewell album. It was a tough pill to swallow, but many anticipated the new record, wondering what kind of goodness DCB could serve up for their final album. As it turns out, their final album Give Us Rest is an eclectic well-thought out, two-disc album offering nearly two hours of fun and worship.

Disc one begins, sounding as if it were recorded live in an old English church. During the opening track, we hear footsteps along a sidewalk, a church door open, and the piano music begin. “Oh Great God, Give us Rest” follows, longing to enter God’s rest. It builds very nicely, easily making for some of David Crowder Band’s best works yet. Choirs singing Latin worship songs mix throughout the wonderful David Crowder Band album, helping set the plot as would be in an old church. You can almost imagine the surroundings and envision a story happening therein the “musical score” of this album.

One of the highlights off the first disc of Give Us Rest proves to be the somewhat quirky, and definitely fun, “Blessedness of Everlasting Light,” with church bells and a swing tempo that help engage the listener. It does have a serious twist to it, too, making an excellent and emotional track. Seven tracks called “sequences” are also contained on the first disc, the first of which sounds so comparable to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO). Escalating and haunting pianos mixed with the classy rock will definitely engage the listener! The other six are either haunting (Sequence 2), blissful instrumentals (Sequences 3, 4, and 7), somewhat chaotic (Sequence 5), or worshipful interludes (Sequences 6 and 7). All are different, but enjoyable, and you would almost think they were intentionally trying to remake TSO it was so enjoyable!

A reprise of bells makes up the intro for disc two, which is the CD containing the worship songs the listener has come to know and love from David Crowder Band. “Oh My God” and “I Am A Seed” both have acoustic campfires, banjos, and choirs, sounding like a campfire song and more like what you would expect from Rend Collective than DCB. (But they are definitely enjoyable, nevertheless!) “After All (Holy)” is timeless, with heavenly choirs singing of God’s holiness, and another highlight proves to be “Oh Great Love of God,” speaking of the “Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world.” The remainder of the disc tends to lean toward the acoustic side of things, delivering powerful songs of longing for heaven (a few of which are well-known hymns), or contemplations of the goodness of God. Some of these include “’Tis So Sweet to Trust In Jesus,” “Oh My God I’m Coming Home,” and the touching “Because He Lives.”

Give Us Rest is definitely a labor of love from David Crowder* Band, and it’s not hard to see that through this final album. We wave goodbye to a well-known and beloved worship group, but we also are presented with a wonderful 34-track album on two-discs that will leave you hitting repeat after each listen. It’s some of DCB’s best works ever – not one that you will want to miss!

Thank you, David Crowder* Band, for writing such amazing worship music for the church for 12 years. You will be missed.

Lindsay McCaul: If It Leads Me Back Review

You may have already heard her radio single “Say My Name,” or seen her open for Casting Crowns on the Come to the Well Tour; or maybe you haven’t yet become familiar with her music. But the truth is, Lindsay McCaul is a very talented singer/songwriter. The Reunion Records artist releases her debut If It Leads Me Back, offering hope and encouragement for her listeners. Lindsay addresses personal topics such as feeling overwhelmed, struggling with eating disorders, or fighting to keep trusting in God. These topics, and more, make Lindsay’s music very easy to connect with.

If It Leads Me Back opens up with the nice contemporary track “Say My Name,” Lindsay’s first single. Based on the account in Genesis of Lot’s wife turning to a pillar of salt, “Say My Name” speaks of leaving the past behind and walking forward with God’s help. Fill-ins at the beginning and ending of the track are very enjoyable, as are Lindsay’s beautiful vocals that are very flexible. “Ready,” reminding me of Meredith Andrews’ music, speaks of how we can run to God and receive from Him at any time. We don’t need to feel guilty or ashamed before Him: “You are ready to answer every time I call/ You’re waiting to catch the pieces as they fall/ You’ve seen every tear/ standing by to drawn me near/ I am finally down on my knees/ and You are ready.”

“Come Rest,” co-written with Mia Fieldes, slows down a bit, as it speaks of finding rest in Jesus when we most feel overwhelmed. As was the case with Lindsay, we often feel so overwhelmed that we begin living our lives, and maybe even fulfilling our calling, outside of God’s help. God wants us to come and receive strength from Him, as “Come Rest” shares: “But I remember You said it’s done, so I come.”

The soft and absolutely powerful “Take My Hand” is based on Matthew 14, of Peter sinking in the waves. Even though he was afraid and began to doubt, Jesus grabbed His hand nevertheless. The lyrics of the chorus, a bit doubtful, are also filled with so much hope: “Didn’t You know that I’d be scared/ couldn’t You see I was unprepared/ I’m not asking for reasons You hold or the safety of land/ I just need You to hold my hand.”

“Face to Face,” a simple worship song based on Revelation 22, speaks of longing to see God’s face. Following is my personal favorite off the If It Leads Me Back record, “You Never Change.” Lindsay was challenged by Jason Ingram to write a happy song and this is the result – a Francesca Battistelli-style pop track speaking of how God never leaves us in the good times or bad. It’s definitely fun, inspiring, and makes for a great sing-along-song! :)

“Speak” is a cry out for God to speak into our life, especially at the times when we feel so dry, while “Hold On to Me” is a timeless acoustic-guitar track. Through this song, we are encouraged by remembering that, though at times we fail at holding on to God, He will always be holding on to us: “’Cause I’m not good at holding on, I’m weak/ I guess that’s how this is supposed to be/ when I am barely holding on, You hold on to me.”

And for the times when we have a decision to make and God seems to be silent, “Where Do You Go?” is another outstanding track. With strong strings that keep things from going too mellow, the lyrics of the chorus are very thought-provoking: “Where do you go when there’s no voice from Heaven/ where do you go when all you have are questions/ maybe the silence is His mercy and there’s beauty in His mystery/ You should know you’re not alone.”

The soft “Let Go” was written about an eating disorder, but addresses anything that keeps us captive… “So take me and hold me/ break me and mold me/ I want to let go.” Closing the album, “If It Leads Me Back to You” speaks of going through any storm in life if it leads us closer to our God. Co-written with Cindy Morgan, the sereneness makes for an excellent closer.

Lindsay McCaul’s debut If It Leads Me Back is very personal and relatable. Her angelic vocals combine with the message of hope and trusting in God during life’s many struggles perfectly. This album will open up for you more with each listen through. If you’re at a tough spot in your life, or even if you know the feeling all too well, this is an album I highly recommend. Fans of Meredith Andrews will also enjoy this project!

Adam Cappa: The Rescue EP Review

The first time I heard of Adam Cappa through Jeremy Camp, I was wowed. It was his song “Sail Away,” recorded independently that really hit home with me at a hard time in my life. Shortly thereafter, Adam signed to BEC Recordings and began plans for a full-length record. For fans, Adam recently released the three-song The Rescue EP which provides an excellent preview into the new album. The EP, actually co-produced by Jeremy Camp, shows off Adam’s awesome mature vocals and contemporary style.

The title track opens the EP, a hopeful track about finding our rescue in Jesus during the hard times: “I need You right now, here in this moment/ I’m losing ground, can’t keep going/ I’m calling out for You to rescue me…” A track that I have loved ten times more after seeing the adorable music video, “The Rescue” seems to summarize the music and ministry of Adam Cappa. ‘All I Want,” with beautiful piano and strings, builds strongly by the chorus, speaking of the only thing we want – Jesus – and speaks of the beauty of being in His presence. And lastly, the slow piano track “How Worthy” has a gospel tone to it, in a track that makes it easy to pour out your heart in worship along with Adam’s welcoming vocals.

Adam Cappa’s three-song EP is enough to tell you that he is an artist to watch! His worshipful and inviting music will resonate with your spirit and encourage you in your walk with Jesus.

WFW: Truth Is...

What is truth? That seems like a question many of us are asking in today's day and age. Nothing is certain anymore, and many of the things we trusted in have left us empty, battered, and bruised.

Pilate himself asked Jesus the same question:

John 18:38 Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, "I find no fault in Him at all.

Pilate asked Jesus and then immediately went back out to the Jews without waiting for an answer. Perhaps he felt like there was no truth, or maybe he didn't really want an answer -- I don't really know. But if he had waited for Jesus' response, it may have sounded like this:

John 17:17 "Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth."

This is what Jesus said in His final prayer for His disciples and those who would follow after. (That includes us, so this is an awesome prayer to read! We can see what great things Jesus desires for us!) He prayed that God would sanctify us by His truth, and then stated simply, "Your word is truth." In a word of uncertainy, the one thing that is still certain is His Word (and that Word will not return to Him void, as we read last week).

So where does truth come from? Here are a couple passages from John chapters 14 and 16.

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."

John 14:16-18 "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever-- the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you."

John 16:13 "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come."

Truth comes from the Holy Spirit, living inside of us, teaching and instructing us. Verse 26 of John 14 says, "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you." See, we need to be putting God's Word into our hearts constantly. We can't be feeding our Spirits one time in the day and expect it to be nurtured all day, just like we can't do that in the natural. But the point here, is that if the Holy Spirit brings it to our remembrance, we must be continually putting it in, so He can remind us of it, right? That's how He guides us into all truth.

The truth of God's Word also makes us free!

John 8:31-32 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

What upsets me about this passage is how often people quote verse 32 out of context. They say "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," but forget the first part of the passage! It's not just ANY truth that makes you free... "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed," Jesus said. We're talking that the Word of God will set us free when we abide in it! This is powerful. So what does abide mean? It means to "dwell, endure, remain, be present, stand." Like we talked about last week, hold fast the confession of your hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. He won't allow His word to return to Him void, so stand on His word, endure and remain in it.

The last passage about truth I want to bring to your attention is John 18:37:

Pilate therefore said to Him, "Are You a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."

(Remember, this passage comes right before Pilate asks "What is Truth?") Everyone who is of the truth hears God's voice. This tells us two things -- 1) The more of God's Word we put in our hearts, the more He will be able to speak to us, because He can remind us of His word, and 2) When we read His Word, He IS actually speaking to us! This is His Word to us, so don't casually read it over. Ask God to "open your eyes to see wondrous things from His law" (Psalm 119:18). Then, as you read, watch passages jump out at you like you've never seen them before! It's so exciting when God begins to show you things!

In conclusion, there is always something that is a constant -- God's Word. It never changes, and Jesus, in fact, stated "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away." Trust in His Word, and tune into the Holy Spirit to make the truth come alive in Your heart. Let Him show you wondrous things from your law, and let His Word set you free!

Movie Review: A Mile In His Shoes

Only a miracle can help baseball coach Arthur “Murph” Murphy (Dean Cain) and his losing minor league baseball team. As Murph sets out to recruit new talent for the team, he stumbles upon Mickey (Luke Schroder), a young farmer with an incredible pitcher’s arm. However, Mickey’s parents are reluctant to allow him to join the team because he has Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism. Murph convinces Mickey’s parents that life in the minor league will benefit their unique son, but he doesn’t realize just how much his new recruit will help the team’s game and, more importantly, their spirit. Based on a true story, A Mile in His Shoes is an inspirational film that celebrates faith, determination and the power of friendship.

Let me start out this review by stating that I have seen tons of sports films. Usually, the plot is totally predictable – a losing team finds someone with talent, the rest of the team is jealous, but they rise up anyways, make it to the state, do very badly by the first half of the game and then overcome by the end. And while some of this was the case with A Mile In His Shoes, this film was definitely a special one.

Inspired by a Thomas Kinkade painting, A Mile In His Shoes is a new favorite film of mine for several reasons. The main asset to the film is that the actors and actresses picked for the film were excellent! Dean Cain’s upbeat and outgoing personality as Murph opened the film very well, making the viewer feel comfortable with the plot. He meets Mickey (Luke Schroder, who, for his first acting job, did a superb job), a special autistic boy, and immediately falls in love with him. Murph’s losing baseball team loves Mickey as well, and makes him feel right at home, teaching him the ways of football, and how to be more social. He catches on quickly, until trouble brews and he is forced to restart. (I won’t spoil the plot here, but it’s definitely an exciting one!)

For those worried about family-friendliness, there isn’t much to worry about. I was very happy to see whole prayers, Bible-reading, as well as Christian counseling actively involved in the plot. Those things should be in more films, but they sadly are lacking, so it’s great to see films like this include it with no shame. There is use of one foul word halfway through the film, but other than that, the film is very clean and family-friendly. There is also one-semi violent partying scene, which I expected to show something objectionable, but it did not.

All in all, A Mile In His Shoes is an inspiring film of determination, faith, and success. It includes amazing actors, a riveting plot, and a terrific message of the power of friendship all in one film. A Mile in His Shoes is definitely a new favorite film of mine!

Kari Jobe: Where I Find You Review

The simple “One Desire” is phenomenal, especially the repetitive rhetoric, “My heart will always sing ‘I love you!’” The listener will be singing along in no-time to this easy track, speaking of the wonderful peace that surrounds us when staying in God’s presence. Of course, Kari’s beautiful vocals are a perfect match for the peacefulness of this track. “Find You On My Knees” is very melodic, as Kari’s vocals sound stronger than ever, and aptly, the lyrics are also very strong speaking of finding God in all of life’s chaos when we get on our knees to hear His voice speak to us.

The happy and upbeat “Savior’s Here” is a celebration that God is always with us and will never leave us, while “Stars in the Sky” is a beautiful reminder that God has all under control. Mostly a piano track, and very timeless, “What Love is This?” speaks of the wonders of God’s love, confessing that He is “always enough for me,” making for a very still track.

“I Run to You” picks up the pace, again speaking of the One that we can run to when all of life seems to be crashing down around us, while “Rise” speaks of giving our all in praise to God as thanksgiving for His redemptive work in our lives. Kari also offers her powerful cover of “Love Came Down,” made popular by Seventh Day Slumber on their The Anthem of Angels album. Thought not quite as overpowering, it’s definitely more angelic and an amazing cover!

Closing the album, we hear the worshipful “We Exalt Your Name,” a simple track of praise to God, followed by the piano-only “Here,” a restful track reminding us that we can find refuge under the shadow of God’s wings whenever we go to Him.

Kari Jobe’s Where I Find You is an album you want to have on hand when you need some peace in life and want to bring in the presence of God. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and heavenly, and an excellent collection of tracks that encourage the listener to rest in, and experience the presence of God. Where I Find You is an excellent worship project!

Bethel Music: The Loft Sessions Review

Bethel Music is back at it again with The Loft Sessions, a wonderful ten-track worship project recorded live in a loft, with family and friends. Featuring vocal talents of Jeremy Riddle, Brian and Jenn Johnson, and more, the heavenly worship music composed of strings, piano, and acoustic guitar, is classic and yet very tasteful.

With plenty of fill-ins, “One Thing Remains” begins the album, speaking of the unending love of God, especially through the standout line of the bridge: “Your love never fails/ it never gives up/ it never runs out on me.” It also borrows lines from Romans 8, that nothing can separate us from His love. Following is “My Dear,” with more of an upbeat country feel. It has nice harmonies and several vocalists, making for a great listen.

The upbeat “You Have Won Me” speaks of how God’s love has captured us, while the single “Come to Me” offers hope to those who feel helpless, lonely, and discouraged. Originally written as the result of the often natural disasters, this beautiful and powerful single reminds us that God will never leave us, and we simply need to come to Him for peace and safety – that He is all we need. It’s easily the best track off The Loft Sessions, one you’ll have on repeat.

“Walk in the Promise” builds powerfully throughout, after which follows “You Know Me,” a timeless and contemplative track based on the Psalms, that God knows every detail of our life. The way the strings build the track, mixed with the beautiful piano, was simply stunning.

“Angels” is fittingly a heavenly song of praise for all the benefits God has bestowed on us. “Fall Afresh” follows, sung by the unmistakable Jeremy Riddle, in a powerful prayer for God to come and fill our souls with a renewed passion for Him. “Draw Near,” mostly acoustic guitar with attractive and soft harmonies, speaks of the desire to become closer to God and be more like Him. “This is What You Do,” with chanting lyrics and hand clapping, closes the album on an upbeat note, speaking of how God makes us come alive (“This is what you do, You make me come alive”).

And for those who purchase the digital deluxe edition, an acoustic version of “Angels” and “Fall Afresh” are also available, both very harmonic and worshipful. They make the deluxe edition definitely worth the extra bucks. :)

The Loft Sessions is a very classical and heavenly set of worship songs, contemplating the deep, unending love of God for us all. It’s irresistibly serene with songs that will fill your heart with worship to our King. Amazing worship album!

Rend Collective Experiment: Homemade Worship by Handmade People Review

Rend Collective Experiment’s debut project Organic Family Hymnal received praise from many critics and top-notch Christian music sites. Now the “collective” worship group returns with their highly anticipated follow-up Homemade Worship by Handmade People. This new set of eleven eclectic worship songs encourages the listener to lay aside their momentary problems and worship an everlasting God.

Strong 70s-sounding choirs open Homemade Worship by Handmade People in “Praise Like Fireworks,” an enjoyable fast-paced track with repetitive lyrics that make singing along a cinch. Especially a standout is the opening line, “You’ve given us a heart, given us a home in You!” Rend Collective Experiment’s cover of “Be Thou My Vision” follows, modernized by updated lyrics and re-titled “You are My Vision.” The bluegrass sound, upbeat tempo, and strong choirs make this track a highlight off the album as a whole.

“The Cost,” featuring wonderful vocals, speaks of counting the cost (“I’ve counted up the cost, and You are worth it”), after which we hear a wonderful acoustic reprise. The beautiful single “Second Chance” follows, contemplating the unbelievable mercy shown us in Christ’s sacrifice for our sins. The deep chorus is especially touching: “Oh Your cross it changes everything/ There my world begins again with You/ Oh Your cross it's where my hope restarts/ A second chance is Heaven's heart.”

With beautiful female harmonies, “True Intimacy” speaks of setting Christ as your ambition, and desiring only to know Him more, a very heartfelt and serene track. Borrowing lyrics from Matthew 6, “Build Your Kingdom” is a prayer that God would build His kingdom in the church and live through us on earth. Following, “Desert Soul” was my personal favorite off Rend Collective Experiment’s sophomore project, as the cry of desperation for more of God is very relatable and encouraging at the same time. The way it builds throughout is heavenly, and I’m sure it will be any honest listener’s top tracks off this record.

“Christ Has Set Me Free” is a simple celebration of deliverance (“Christ has set me free from negativity, from impossibility/ Christ has set me free/ All hope has been released/ O Christ has set me free”) while the slower “Keep Me Near Your Heart” is a timeless, hymn-like prayer for closeness to God. On the same heavenly note comes “Alabaster,” easy to get lost in its peacefulness. Ending the album, “Shining Star,” again upbeat, is a prayer that God, the “Shining Star” would “come and guide our hearts.”

Rend Collective Experiment is definitely original, containing heart-felt, awesome worship – some of which is upbeat and fun. The collective worship group addresses the desire for a close relationship to God in their sophomore project Homemade Worship By Handmade People, a topic very relevant and that invokes participation from the listener. If you’re looking for an original worship project, look no further!

WFW: His Word Will Not Return to Him Void

"For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," says the LORD. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, And do not return there, But water the earth, And make it bring forth and bud, That it may give seed to the sower And bread to the eater, So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it." -- Isaiah 55:8-11

This passage of Scripture really stood out to me yesterday during my reading time. God's Word does not return to Him void -- what a powerful statement that is!

What's interesting, I think, about this passage is the meaning of the word "void." Its literal meaning (taken from the Greek definition) is "vain" or "empty." God doesn't send forth a word, and then a few years later take it back in vain because people or circumstances have changed. That's why reading His Word is important! We open it up, see something that applies to us, and put it into practice. If you read, for instance, Psalm 138:8 which says that God will perfect that which concerns you, you have a promise that you can stand on! It doesn't matter how long it may take, or what it looks like to your eyes, He is faithful who has promised.

"Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful." -- Hebrews 10:23

Here we see it again. God is faithful, and what He promises WILL come to pass! Confess His Word over your life, and don't waver! You can read Hebrews 11:11-16 to read about Abraham and Sarah, who, though it was impossible to have children at their age, they counted God faithful, and they did have a child! They were both about 100 years old, but because God promised it, they believed Him, and they saw the promise come to pass.

Let's be like that! If God has given you a word to hold on to -- whether it be through a prophecy, message in Church on Sunday, through Him speaking to you in one-on-one conversation, or through a passage that jumps out at you in the Scripture -- let's hold fast the confession of our hope firm without wavering. That Word will not return to God void, and He is faithful Who promised.

It is so hard to believe it's already 2012! 2011 seemed to fly by, but it definitely was an amazing year! A few highlights for me included a couple of AWESOME concerts and interviews, amazing stats here on the site, some superb debut artists (Icon For Hire being my favorite) and some excellent releases. Here are a few plans I have up my sleeves for 2012:

More Video Interviews: These seem to be my readers' favorite part of the site, so I definitely plan to do more of those at upcoming concerts and events in the area!
Editorials: I've done a few of these in the past. I share my thoughts on a controversial subject of Christian music, and have my readers chime in. It's always great to hear everyone's point of view on a controversial subject!
Devotionals: I had not done any of these in a while, mostly due to lack of response from readers. But this is something you can definitely expect to see more of in 2012, thanks to a couple of readers for letting me know they'd like a comeback!
Giveaways: Who doesn't like giveaways?! You can always check the "Giveaways" tab at the top of the site to see if there are any current ones.

Of course, you can expect many more reviews, lyric and music videos, press releases, and official artist updates -- as always. I'm also getting excited for some releases early this year, including new music from Kari Jobe, Kutless, Britt Nicole, Sixteen Cities, and more! You can expect to find reviews here on the site closer to release date of each.

As we start another New Year off, remember that God makes all things new. Whether you're looking forward to facing a New Year or not, remember that you are not alone! This is a promise I hold on to -- "He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ." (Revelation 21:5; Philippians 1:6) Amen!

The Kings Kid: Set Sail and Seek... Review

A 70/80s flashback -- that's what you get from an honest listen to The King's Kid's second full-length project, Set Sail and Seek... With 14 exciting and uniquely crafted tracks based largely on Scripture, The King's Kid offers fun punk rock infused with creative melodies and catchy rhythms.

The upbeat "Rise Up" takes the stage, changing tempos occasionally, with chanting and overlapping lyrics, reminding the listener, "today is the day that the Lord has made." "So Much More" follows, reminding the listener to live life to the fullest, while lead guitar furnishes "6 AM," which will have listeners singing along in no time to its catchy melody.

"Trust" and "Unfinished Road," both a bit chaotic but with fun melodies, speak of trusting in God -- and I might add that the excellent lyrics matched with the upbeat punk rock was quite unique. A little less upbeat, "Tomorrow Today" addresses knowing that your future rests in God's hands and tells a story of someone finding God's security and salvation for themselves, very cool to hear.

With a prodigal son theme, "Clean Face in a Dirty Place" follows, while "Skies Fall" is very melodic and enjoyable. "The Whole Picture" has a more grunge rock twist to it and is more playful, as it speaks of how God sees "the whole picture" and we can rest in Him. Lead guitar instrumentals also make it a standout.

"Jim Braddock," aptly a western-sounding track, is very fun, and is followed by a nice set of closing tracks. "Heaven's Rejoice," "See Dad Shine," and "Hoisted Anchors” all have awesome Christian lyrics, crazy punk rock, and even more surprises. The album closes up with the nice acoustic track "The Lighthouse, surprisingly very soothing.

The Kings Kid is a real treat for those who miss 70/80s punk rock. Though it's not particularly my style, the album's overwhelming theme of putting your trust in God despite circumstances is very encouraging. Fun, upbeat, crazy, and cool!

Silversyde: Circus Circus Review

I was blown away when I watched Silversyde take the stage, as they opened up for The City Harmonic and Everyday Sunday. The chick-fronted hard-rock band rocked the stage like there was no tomorrow, offering songs of hope and healing to their audience. Shortly following, the band released their debut full-length Circus Circus to Raging Storm Records. After reading Silversyde’s testimony of deliverance and restoration first-hand from the members themselves, the music and ministry of this energetic rock group is much more meaningful, making Circus Circus an outstanding and enjoyable listen!

“Run to You” immediately catches the ear with explosive grunge guitars, extra bass, and steady drums. Lead singer Laura Jones holds out her vocals perfectly, making for an all together perfect track with a positive message of running to God for help in loneliness. The title track, a single that has already been making an impact at Christian Rock radio, follows wonderfully. And besides the excellent rock sound, comparable to that of Flyleaf (but with much better vocals, in my opinion), the lyrics are phenomenal: “The fool says in his own heart ‘I’m giving up and there is no God'/ All your life you’ve played that card in this circus, circus/ life is hard and there will be pain/ but nothing ventured is nothing gained/ never wanted to stay the same in this circus, circus now.” An upbeat instrumental with guitar screams between the chorus and bridge is one that will make the listener get up from their sit and move around, at work or not. :)

Beginning softly, “Masquerade” speaks of faking something we’re not, but then, as with the opening two tracks, it wonderfully bursts into an upbeat rock track. “Hear Me” opens with awesome screamo, honestly some of the best I’ve heard yet, and the topic addressed is a great one – the battle of trying to hear God’s voice but feeling bombarded with pressure from all these other voices. This message seems to be a primary one in Silversyde’s music, one that I personally appreciate very much.

“Complete” slows things down a bit, but is a highlight for its strength, reminding the listener that – “You love me for who I am, and not who I want to be/ You’ll take all my mess and take me back again in Your love and complete!” Very strong but worshipful, this track is extraordinary. Another freedom song and a true rocker with a very cool piano mix, “Break Away” speaks of the pain that we cause ourselves by trying to do things our own way, and the freedom we find in Jesus: “Break Away/ it's time for a change/ I can't live my life if I'm not with You/ It all ends the same/ burnt down in flames/ So I'm ready for You to help me/ Break Away!”

“Can’t Let Go” speaks of the overwhelming love of God, and again has some awesome piano mixed in with the overpowering rock, while “The Silence” speaks of the peace we can find in the silence and presence of God. Unexpected guitar twists and turns especially make the latter quite the listen, in addition to the great and encouraging lyrics.

With an almost more pop twist, and special electronic effects throughout the chorus, “You Are There” contemplates the beauty of being in God’s presence, while “Love Song” rests on a slower, worshipful note. It doesn’t forget the guitars, however, and sings out of immense love to God for His love to us. Two acoustic performances, “Hold On” and “Firewall,” close up Circus Circus. Acoustic guitars, piano, tambourines, and Laura’s soft vocals make these acoustic performances very serene and enjoyable.

Silversyde definitely knows how to rock, and Circus Circus is an absolutely amazing rock album! Their Spirit-filled grunge rock mixed with powerful and uplifting lyrics is very appreciated. I look forward to watching Silversyde grow as a band and share their message with the world while rocking out with their audiences. Awesome group, indeed!

Brigitte Donoho: Restored EP Review

If there’s one thing Brigitte Donoho would like you to know about her music, it’s that she has a heart of worship. Whether that be leading worship at her church on Saturday nights, for the youth on Wednesdays, or at a show on the road, that aspect definitely shines through Brigitte’s music. Her six-track EP Restored is a wonderful introduction into her music, one that will leave you asking for more!

Upbeat guitar work opens up the Restored EP in “Wash Over Me,” a track of complete surrender and a prayer for God to take us and make us clean. Brigitte’s flexible vocals and the opening guitar makes her music comparable to that of Yancy’s, and it’s not really a surprise, for both are passionate about leading worship! A little slower, the worshipful “Your Name” highlights the fact that Jesus Christ is always with us to lead us and guide us.

My personal favorite from the Restored EP is “Blood Stained Tears,” a single that Brigitte actually wrote in her sleep! Waking up, she quickly wrote it all out to make sure she didn’t forget it. And glad I am that she didn’t forget it! Similar to a slower Addison Road track, or one of the powerful Hillsong anthems, “Blood Stained Tears” is made through steady guitars, though the single itself is on the slower side of things. Speaking of the immense love God had for us in sending His Son, it is a prayer that God’s grace would abound toward us. It builds perfectly throughout!

The title track follows, a nice prayer for restoration, while “At the Mention of Your Name” speaks of the peace found in God’s name. The climax, however, would have to be the ending rhetoric: “I have victory, at the mention of Your name.” Amen! And lastly, a guitar pop track, contemporary in style but quite catchy, “Save Me” ends the EP. Speaking of those bad days of life, “Save Me” is a prayer that God would give us the strength to get through.

All in all, Restored is a wonderful worship EP! The variation is very welcome, as are Brigitte’s wonderful vocals and polished song-writing skills. I definitely will be looking forward to more music from Brigitte in the future!

The Wrecking: My Window To Heaven EP Review

The Wrecking is set to release their full-length project So Much For Love in February, after not releasing any music for quite some time. But for those who simply can’t wait for the music, The Wrecking is pleased to offer their brand new, five-song Christmas EP, titled My Window to Heaven. Revamping three classic Christmas carols, and offering two all-new ones, My Window to Heaven is a heavenly and timeless Christmas album, sure to be glued to your ears well past Christmas!

The first original, “Glorious,” takes the stage first, staying true to The Wrecking’s classic sound, speaking of the glory of Emmanuel and the beauty of the first Christmas. A cover of the hymn “In the Bleak Midwinter” follows, proving to be the highlight of the EP as a whole. With ringing bells, choirs, and overlapping vocals, the message of the powerful Christmas track that all we really have to give God is our hearts, sticks out well and beautifully.

Another original, “Bright and Morning Star” has a bit of a more electronic edge to it, first sounding a bit mundane lyrically. But by the chorus, we hear the heart of the track – that we need God more than just in December. That is an excellent message, one that most Christmas music is lacking, so kudos to The Wrecking for this great track! Both “Oh Holy Night” and “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” close up the EP, both very peaceful and heavenly. Neither one is much different than most renditions you’ve already heard, but they definitely prove to offer a glorious holiday spirit.

If you’re expecting a more upbeat Christmas album from The Wrecking, you might be disappointed. But otherwise, this album is an amazingly peaceful Christmas album, complete with two originals and the wonderful music that The Wrecking has to give!

Movie Review Friday: Veggietales -- "It's A Meaningful Life"

I’m a huge fan of Veggietales’ classic story remakes, so I knew that It’s A Meaningful Life had to be good! And, after watching the original film It’s A Wonderful Life this past weekend, I was admittedly very excited to see how Veggietales would retell this story for the children.

It begins with Larry the Cucumber starring as Stewart and Petunia as his wife Donna – yes, from Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed, the real names of George and Mary Bailey in the 1930s classic! Stewart spends his whole life in regret, wishing he had only caught a ball in the biggest football game of his life. Doing so would have landed him as a lead player in the team’s advancement to the Salad Bowl. However, missing the catch, due to being tripped by his gourd friend, landed him in the hospital with little or no hope of ever playing football again. So his father (Nebby K. Nezzar) invites him to head his train factory, something that Stewart accepts with much chagrin. After 15 years, his gourd friend, who had gone off to play football in the major leagues, returns to his hometown, expecting to revamp it, name it after himself, and take over the train factory all to make money for himself. Though Stewart cares little about it, he is forced to up the number of trains manufactured each night to ensure that the factory can continue, without needing to be overtaken. (Get the Mr. Potter connection?) But things turn into a disaster, as the workers tire easily and are simply unable to keep up with the high number. One disaster after another, boxes start falling off shelves, toy parts are left everywhere, and many of the workers decide to quit. Stewart is left looking back on his life. “What if?” is the only question Stewart asks himself as he imagines himself catching the ball. Suddenly, a train rushes through the football stadium where Stewart is seated. Called the “What If? Express,” the mysterious conductor, named Gabe, takes Stewart on a ride and he gets his wish – see what life would look like if he had simply caught that ball. Will Stewart live the rest of life with renewed passion? Will he be able to keep the train station from being bought over by his friend, turned enemy?

Besides being a wonderful, child-friendly remake of the It’s A Wonderful Life classic, there are a few other treats in this Veggietales Christmas film. For one, the new silly song “Goodnight Junior” was quite hilarious. His mother attempts to tuck him into bed, but is met with request after request for more stuffed animals to sleep with, till he is buried in a mountain of them! I think most parents will find this hilarious, as they know the pain of this, as will children who will find the fast-pace of the track to be funny.

Also, It’s A Meaningful Life features the new song “Meant to Be” from Steven Curtis Chapman! Among the many bonus features on the DVD is an official music video featuring scenes from the Veggietales film. This song/video from Steven perfectly compliments the message of adoption that appears in It’s A Meaningful Life, through Stewart and Donna’s adopted daughter Emma (or Zuzu, as you know her in the classic film)!

Overall, It’s A Meaningful Life is definitely more childish than the classic black-and-white film, but it’s fun for those who have seen the classic to pick and guess the relations and revisions Veggietales has made! It’s also great Christmas film for the kids. :)

2011 has been an amazing year for Christian music! Besides so many amazing releases, there have been many amazing tours, debuting bands, exciting music news, and more. Jay's Musik Blog is pleased to present you a personal countdown of my personal top ten albums, singles, and music videos of the year! Following each is a short recap on why the album reaches the top of the list. Hope you enjoy, and feel free to leave your feedback or your personal favorites in the comments!

Top Ten Albums of 2011:

10. Downhere -- On The Altar of Love
Downhere has been one of my favorite bands since I first heard their single "A Better Way" on K-Love. I've been blessed by their fun and worshipful style ever since, and even had the chance to see them live and interview them in November. Great guys, and On the Altar of Love is another amazing project!

9. Manic Drive -- Epic
Manic Drive's album Blue was so excellent, I didn't really think it could get any better. But EPIC proved me wrong! "Halo" is one of the most fun songs I have ever heard, and the message is awesome, yet playful. Kudos to Manic Drive for a wonderful fourth album!

8. Robert Pierre -- I'm all In
Robert Pierre is such an inspiration to me. At 18, he has already released three albums, and his mature vocals are phenomenal. I'm All In is an inspiring album, encouraging the listener to step out of the boat and trust God to lead them every step of the way.

7. RED -- Until We Have Faces
Ooooooooh yeeeeeeeaaaaah! RED's Until We Have Faces will rock your face off! I highly admire the humbleness of the rock foursome! Their music reaches the mainstream audiences, while encouraging Christians to find their identity in Christ. Plus, I had the chance to meet their drummer, Joe Rickard, when they played in Jermyn, PA on their Kill the Machine Tour. What an honor!

6. Press Play -- World Anthem
An amazing dance/pop record! That being my favorite genre, World Anthem was an instant sensation for me, and I love Press Play's mix of fun, catchy music with powerful, touching worship tracks. The guys somehow managed to step up a notch from NY2LA, delivering a phenomenal project.

5. Anthem Lights -- Anthem Lights
Man! I don't think I have ever heard any better singers than the guys of Anthem Lights! Besides their outstanding vocals, their confrontational lyrics are inspiring, and you can't beat the stunning music!

4. Icon For Hire -- Scripted
Since the release of their Scripted album in August, Icon For Hire has become my favorite Christian rock band. Though I don't totally know what the guys themselves stand for, the lyrics of Scripted are honest, raw, and amazing. Ariel's forceful yet soft vocals and the exploding rock are awesome! Definitely one of my most listened to projects of the year.

3. Beckah Shae - Destiny
What a blessing Beckah Shae is!! Her downright AWESOME pop mixed with her Scripture-packed lyrics and PHENOMENAL vocals make her one of the best artists in the Christian music scene, in my opinion. Destiny is definitely her best project to date, and "#putyourloveglasseson" is one of my most played songs this year.

2. Aaron Shust -- This is What We Believe
Is there even a way to share how much Aaron Shust's music means to me? I have all four of his albums, and early this year some of his songs really hit home with me and encouraged me. This Is What We Believe does it again! "Wonderous Love," "Never Been A Greater Love," the title track and the #1 song "My Hope is In You" are all so worshipful, and you can't beat Aaron's amazing vocals. :)

1. The City Harmonic -- I Have A Dream
Congrats to The City Harmonic, as my #1 pick for album of the year! I had the chance to meet the guys back in June and hear some of the new songs off the record during their live set. Let me tell you... I could not WAIT for this album, which was also my #1 most anticipated album of the year. "Manifesto" was an amazing song, and I knew that I Have A Dream could only be even better. I was not let down. "Fell Apart," "Spark," and "Wedding Day," and the other nine tracks off the record are some of the most heavenly and real, down-to-earth music you will ever hear. If you don't yet have this album, you will not want to miss it!

Top Ten Singles of 2011:
Favorite singles are much harder to pick out then albums, because you may have a favorite song from a band or album that may not necessarily be at the top of your list. That, or you love the band so much, that all their singles are your favorites! So let's begin my favorites countdown with Robert Pierre's "Light the Way"!

10. Robert Pierre -- "Light the Way"
I was blown away the first time I heard the stream of this single on Robert's website. It's so real, and a hopeful song reminding us that God will guide out every step if we let Him.

9. Manic Drive -- "Halo"
"I rock my halo" is one of the coolest, most innovative rhetorics I've heard in a while. Speaking of shining your lights brightly to the world, "Halo" is a blast! So is EPIC by Manic Drive.

8. RED -- "Never Alone"
I almost want to cry when I hear this song. Though RED's Until We Have Faces CD is mostly hard rock, this single is so encouraging, reminding us that Jesus will never leave or forsake us. I had the chance to see the band play this song live back in October, and I was so blessed by the worship experience that followed.

7. Satellites & Sirens' -- "Ready to Save"
Same goes to Satellites & Sirens! Their independent project Frequency is amazing, but "Ready to Save" is a big blessing. There IS a love, there is a Healer who's ready to save you at all times, and that's the message of this powerful song.

6. Anthem Lights -- "Can't Get Over You"
The first time I watched the acoustic version of this track, I was simply blown away! The lyrics are so heartfelt and worshipful, the lead vocals amazing, and the background vocals just as amazing! I love Anthem Lights for so many reasons, and the above are just some of them.

5. Jason Gray -- "Remind Me Who I Am"
I had the chance to see Jason Gray on the Called to Love Tour back in November. Honestly, I walked in liking his music but not knowing a ton about him and walked out being so blessed! "Remind Me Who I Am" speaks of how we are all beloved in God's eyes. And after he signed my poster "Jay is beloved," the song means a million times more to me than when I first heard it.

4. The City Harmonic -- "I Have A Dream"
Off my favorite record of the year, "I Have A Dream" is the title track. A track of longing for the day when we see God's face and live in perfect peace and harmony, this single is so heavenly, as is all of TCH's music!

3. Icon For Hire -- "Get Well"
This is one track that gets me moving like none other! The extreme honesty, the techno effects, the explosions of rock, and Ariel's super vocals help make this one of my top three singles of the year!

2. Beckah Shae -- #putyourloveglasseson
When I know all the words to a song, it tells you just how much I love it, and #putyourloveglasseson is a song that you will often hear me singing. :) Besides being a catchy song, the message of seeing the world through God's eyes are a standout. I loved this song ten times more after watching the great music video.

1. Aaron Shust -- "My Hope Is In You"

And my #1 single of the year is Aaron Shust's "My Hope Is In You"! Apparently it's many other people's #1 as well, as it has been an AC #1 single for many weeks. This is my favorite off his new record, and has helped me keep my focus on God even through troubled times. This is one of the most amazing songs I have ever heard!

10. Anthem Lights -- "Can't Shut Up"
It's fun when you love a band to actually watch them sing, and such is the case with Anthem Lights. The video for "Can't Shut Up" definitely accentuates the message of the track, but watching the guys sing is the highlight. (Watch here!)

9. Cortni -- "The After Party"
Cortni's CD The After Party was some really great stuff, but the "The After Party" music video was probably my favorite from her musical career so far. Speaking of how we've all been invited to partake of heaven, the video opens up with her checking her mailbox and calling all her friends -- something that is so relatable and fun. (Watch here!)

8. Francesca Battistelli -- "This is the Stuff"
I wasn't a big fan of the fan-made video for her runaway single "This is the Stuff," but her second and more recent one was awesome. Her disappointed expressions while she searches for her keys and reluctantly receives a police ticket are priceless. (Watch here!)

7. Manic Drive -- "Halo"
Again, it's so fun! The music video shows how much Manic Drive can rock, and gives you a peak at what their live shows must be like!! (Watch here!)

6. Downhere -- "Let Me Rediscover You"
Marc's vocals are phenomenal, and Downhere is totally a blast in concert. These reasons make music videos from Downhere special in my book, so "Let Me Rediscover You," about finding our faith is again one of my favorites. (Watch here!)

5. Jason Gray -- "Remind Me Who I Am"
This is one of those videos that made me love the single even more. Jason has such a heart for letting people know that they are loved by God, and this video means so much more after you actually hear him speak. (Watch here!)

4. The City Harmonic -- "I Have A Dream (It Feels Like Home)"
This was a real cool video! To be honest, I think the main reason I enjoy this one, is because it accurately depicts the fun of The City Harmonic's shows. The guys are amazing, Elias' vocals are amazing, and the orchestra they brought in for the filming makes it totally perfect. (Watch here!)

3. Icon For Hire -- "Get Well"
As mentioned, "Get Well" is one of my favorite rock singles of all times, so this video is naturally one of my favorites. I wasn't a huge fan of the lack of colors [except for Ariel's purple hair ;)] but I love watching the band rock out. The blowing papers, screen shakes, light flickerings, and more, make this video totally enjoyable. (Watch here!)

2. Beckah Shae -- "#putyourloveglasseson"
I have watched this video so many times! There are many things I like about it, mostly I think, the fact that the video shows Beckah as the angel that she is. God is using her ministry so mightily, so it's fun to watch a video where she walks down the street and hands people love glasses, telling them to see the people around them through God's eyes. It also makes me want to see Beckah live! And lastly, the fact that Beckah actually played several of the characters is totally cool. :) (Watch here!)

1. Icon For Hire -- "Make a Move"
My #1 favorite is Icon For Hire's "Make a Move"! In the video, the band graphitees an inner-city wall with messages depicting the garbage we've been indoctrinated with until a police offer sees them and chases them! But he flees when he sees a group of supporters there for the band. Police sirens, chasing, and graphitees in one video is way cool! Plus, it also shows how Icon For Hire can rock out... which they do! (Watch here!)

New Single From Sixteen Cities!

I am happy to report that Sixteen Cities is releasing a new single by year's end! Titled "Love Is Making A Way," the single is from their sophomore full-length, slated for release in late February. As a big fan of the Centricity Music group, I will definitely be counting down the days! Also, in honor of the new single, Centricity U released a new video on their Youtube channel yesterday about Sixteen Cities and the single and radio promotion. This is quite ridiculous... but absolutely hilarious!

I plan on posting some more of Centricity U's videos, so be on the lookout for that! Enjoy the show. :)

Music Video: The Heart of Christmas

Have you seen Matthew West's new music video "The Heart of Christmas"? Here it is for you. See how many of the characters you can pick out!

If you recognized any of the characters, good for you! This music video features scenes from the new film The Heart of Christmas, based on Matthew's heart-breaking song "One Last Christmas." It premiered on the Gospel Music Channel earlier this month with encores planned throughout the Christmas season. The main actress is Jeanne Wilhelm, who played Jill Buchan in the amazing film Faith Like Potatoes! Also starring are Candace Cameron Bure, Erin Bethea (from Fireproof), Kelsey Marie (who happens to be Anthem Light's Kyle Kupecky's fiancee!) and also features a special appearance from Matthew West! I'll let you know as soon as I see that it's being released to DVD. It will probably be a tear-jerking film, but with all these amazing actors/actresses, I can't wait to watch it!

Movie Review: Veggietales -- "God Loves You Very Much"

“Does God love me?” That’s a question kids often ask their parents, and a question that the veggie kids ask Larry the Cucumber in the latest Veggietales film God Loves You Very Much. Based on Veggietales’ motto since show #1, “God made you special, and He loves you very much,” this is the follow-up to the successful God Made You Special. Featuring three fun Veggietales classics, and an all-new story and sing along, God Loves You Very Much is over 90 minutes of veggie fun, instilling “Sunday morning values” into their young audience.

But in addition to a collection of three great Veggietales classics on one DVD, this new Veggietales DVD does something else: All three Bible story retellings help children to see just how much God really does love them! They tell the stories of Bible characters who persevered and learned to have faith in God during their trials and saw God come through for them. And in the introduction, we hear the excellent, but humorous new “story-song” “Does God Love Me?” in which Junior and Laura, plus their two adorable veggie friends, get a lesson from Larry the Cucumber in two Scripture verses for them to apply whenever feeling unloved.

And as always, Veggietales is very creative. You know that if you’ve seen the three episodes Rack, Shack and Benny, Gideon: Tuba Warrior¸ or The Ballad of Little Joe that all appear on this DVD, but it appears in the intro as well. Larry the Cucumber paints a picture to show what he thinks of God’s love, while Bob the Tomato prepares for his show idea, “Painting in the Rain.” He even has a yellow umbrella and raincoat! But the “directors,” the French peas, have a different idea – “Paining on a Train,” both of which they decide to test. We see “screen tests” at the end of the film that were quite hilarious. And of course, every viewer, even older folks will get a hearty laugh or two out of these great Veggietales shows!

So all in all, God Loves You Very Much is a wonderful collection of three classic shows plus the wonderful intro, all of which show kids that God loves them unconditionally, no matter if they “dirty up their clothes or forget to blow their nose, or don’t listen to their dads”! It’s a great show, and you can’t beat sitting down and watching 90 minutes of veggie fun!

The Best Rendition of "Do You Hear What I Hear?"... by far!

When people ask what my favorite Christmas song is, I usually reply with "Mary Did You Know?" and that would probably be accurate. Every single rendition I've heard yet of this song is so powerful and a beautiful song. However, I think I found a new favorite! I have never really been a fan of "Do You Hear What I Hear?" mostly because it doesn't make a ton of sense, to be honest. ("Said the night wind to the little lamb," and then "said the little lamb to the shepherd boy..." Huh?!) However, you can't argue that the guys of Anthem Lights can SING! Plus, watching them live is so much fun. That being said, here is their rendition of "Do You Hear What I Hear?" that makes me sing along as loud as I can each time I hear it! So good. Check it out:

Marc Martel Wins the Queen Extravaganza Contest!

At 4 PM EST, Downhere's Marc Martel was announced as one of the two lead vocals for the Queen Extravaganza Tour, hitting the states in early 2012! This came as no surprise to fans of Downhere, who have recognized the similarity since the band's formation. Also, with close to 5 million views on his original audition, plus appearances on the Ellen show, countless interviews (including one with yours truly!), and fan recognition, Marc certainly deserved the position. Shake the Nation: Follow Review

Healing for the broken and finding hope in Jesus Christ is a topic Shake the Nation is not afraid to address. The Dream Records’ group, a worship group from Bay Area Fellowship made a name for themselves with their debut Follow, which charted high on Christian rock charts, #6 on Christian Albums billboard. The solid debut will have you listening to this album on repeat, and definitely looking forward to more.

Comparable to Press Play’s “Life Is Beautiful,” “The Anthem” opens up Shake the Nation’s debut with grunge guitars and strong percussion. We immediately hear of the band’s name, as the chorus states emphatically, “We’re gonna shake the nations! Shout it loud/ shake the ground…” This bold and audacious track is a wonderful opener, and one that shows off lead singer Mark Marquez’s amazingly flexible vocals. Equally as upbeat, “Undone” speaks of complete brokenness and falling apart. A very honest track, the guitar instrumental following, after the track appears to have closed, is very enjoyable.

“You” is a passionate rocker, stating that all we want to do is “tell the world it’s you that’s changing me” while “Satisfy” slows things down a bit. Sounding very comparable to Seventh Day Slumber, we are reminded that only Jesus can satisfy us completely. This track is also very full, with fill-ins, strong guitars, and again, wonderful vocals.

And while the upbeat “No Greater Love” speaks of how Jesus is the best gift that could have ever been given, the serene and heart-felt “Hero” addresses the fact that we long to be set free and “need a hero to set us free.” The way the track builds is simply amazing, paving the way wonderfully for “Be Still,” a Scriptural track which admonishes the listener to be still and know that He is God – very worshipful and peaceful.

The more contemporary-sided “Open” states that we all have something to sing about, and the absolutely beautiful “You Hold Everything” is very worshipful, a track that makes you want to crank it up and throw up your hands along in worship. “How Beautiful,” also on the slower side of things, is a contemplative track, thinking of all that God has done for us.

You would expect the title track to be what it is – once again upbeat with strong guitars and vocals. It’s emphatic vocals that pledge to “follow You all our days!” definitely matches the music perfectly. And almost on the same note, “Right Now” speaks of worshiping the Lord and shouting His praises right now! I love the high-energy of this set of worship songs.

For the last set of songs, “All I Need” is a timeless declaration of God’s faithfulness, followed by the closing track “Face to Face.” Mostly acoustic guitar and piano, the track daydreams about the glorious day when we will actually be able to see the face of Jesus. It’s a wonderful closing track, and one that accurately depicts the longing that Christians have for that day.

Shake the Nation’s Follow CD is definitely eclectic! With a little worship, and much more upbeat tracks with strong guitars and emphatic vocals, Shake the Nation is an artist that fans of Seventh Day Slumber’s will definitely want to check out. This is an outstanding worship project!

Beckah Shae: Scripture Snacks Volume 1 Review

You know those times when you just need to refresh your mind with the Word of God? Maybe you’re on the road and just need something to lift you up while you drive around. Beckah Shae’s Scripture Snacks will do just that! Her first volume of short, purely Scripture-tracks is perfect for renewing your mind and focusing on Jesus Christ, all the while enjoying some great beats that will get you moving in your seat!

With harmonious background vocals, “Love” opens up the Scripture Snacks album, speaking the words of 1 Corinthians 13, stating emphatically that “His banner over me is love!” Also enjoyable about this album, and especially noticeable through this opening track is the percussion and bass done purely through vocals from Beckah’s husband and producer, Jack “Shoc” Shocklee! You wouldn’t even notice, if you didn’t know – it’s that believable!

“Just delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart” – that’s the message of “Desire,” which is more upbeat than it’s predecessor. The highlight, however, of this short track proves to be the, “How He loves you” that Beckah sings repetitively. “Harmony,” with a little more of a haunting melody, reminds us to bless those who persecute us and “love to curse ya” as Beckah adds on. Of all the tracks, this track is probably the one that will get stuck in your head most easily! We all need this reminder, but the melody of the track is so easy to remember after just one listen.

Montell Jordan appears in “Hope,” which is based on Jeremiah 29:11 speaking of how God has plans to prosper us and give us a hope and a future. It also combines with “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.” “Hope” is definitely harmonic and edifying, but also has some somewhat-humorous comments from Montell Jordan throughout. With more of a pop-twist, “Light” reminds us to shine our lights brightly to the world, and bring glory back to God. Following, “Sound Mind” comes as a twist of Philippians 4 with poetic lyrics and a catchy pop beat.

“Thanksgiving” begins with thanksgiving from Beckah’s adorable daughter, and builds to admonish the listeners to enter the Lord’s courts with praise and thanks, while “Wait (feat. Ametria)” proved to be my favorite Scripture Snack off the album. With a very contagious melody and strong percussion, this Scripture Snack speaks of waiting on the Lord and being patient for Him.

“Woman” again features guest vocals from Montell Jordan, and encourages women to be Christ-like and see themselves as God sees them, realizing that “charm is deceptive and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord shall be praised.” The percussion from this Scripture Snack is particularly energetic. Lastly, based on Numbers 6:24-26, “Bless You” is the Priestly blessing put into song. Strong tambourine effects on this closing track make the track very strong, and definitely a standout.

Scripture Snacks, Vol. 1 is a great way to keep your mind on God’s Word! You can be singing these out, playing them on your way to work, listening on your break time, or wherever else. Each track is less than 3-minutes long, which makes for the perfect reminder throughout your day. I know I will be highly anticipating Volume 2 – this is a powerful tool in your walk with the Lord! These aren’t just snacks, they’re treats!

In The Midst of Lions: Shadows Review

Last August, death metal group In the Midst of Lions delivered their record The Heart of Man, a project that dealt with being sincere in your walk with the Lord. Now, the group, also known as ITMOL, returns with their third studio project, Shadows, which is also their sophomore project with Facedown Records. This time, ITMOL addresses the issue of action, reminding us that we need to make a change in the world and live for Christ. And although the death metal listener will definitely enjoy the heaviness of this project, the Scripture-packed lyrics are no doubt the highlight of ITMOL’s music!

A slightly haunting intro starts off “False Idols,” which also sounds a bit chaotic at the beginning, but soon hits off into a steady metal track with grunge guitars – easily the best track off Shadows. The roaring vocals are based on Exodus and the people worshiping the golden calf. The emphatic and repetitive lyrics strongly state: “Smash your idols/ destroy distraction/ exchanging truth/ for a lie.” A lead guitar instrumental near the end of the track is very enjoyable as well! With plenty of guitar screams, “The Call” strongly encourages listeners to answer the call God has placed on their life, and reminds them that they can do all things through Him who empowers them through His Spirit: “Will you answer the call/ or will you fall?/ You were meant for so much more than what this world has told you in the past./ Will you step up, or will you stand down?/ This is The Call.” The first set of songs = totally amazing, and some of the best death metal I’ve ever set my ears on.

“Take Your Place” sounds very much like “The Call,” only with more fast-paced screamo lyrics. Lyrics that will no doubt get stuck in the listener’s head are the most forceful lyrics of the bridge: “He lives within, so set Him free. This is where the change begins/ now turn the tide! Turn the tide.” “Overcome,” another powerful metal track, is a screamo prayer that God would shape us into who He is calling us to be.

“Cry of the Oppressed” speaks of the troubles of this life, but how God hears our cry and promises to deliver us, while “New Creation” speaks of making changes in our life because Christ has set us free from our old man. Guitar riffs, guitar screams, and of course the screamo deliver these messages powerfully and honestly in only the way that death metal could!

“An Offering,” simple lyrically is one of the most chaotic, upbeat tracks on the record, simply pleading with God to take the offering that we have to give Him, even though it comes nowhere near to what He offered for us. This track also has a high-pitched guitar instrumental half-way through that is almost a highlight of the whole album Shadows as a whole! “Hardened Hearts” is a prayer that God would soften the hearts of those who see the signs but refuse to believe in Him: “Stretch out your hands to these hardened hearts and humble those who stand against You.” The majority of it doesn’t sound much different than the opening tracks musically, but it is outstanding lyrically and does become a little more fast-paced near the end.

“Prepare the Way” has a more catchy beat to it, one that makes me want to head-bop every time I hear it! Lyrically, we again hear the message of answering the call of God on our lives, as the influential rhetoric is this: “You were born for this! He has prepared your way, now be the one to rise up!” And lastly, “One For All” is based largely on Isaiah 53, how Jesus kept His mouth through His pain, and He gladly took it so our relationship with Him could be restored. Reminding me of Becoming the Archetype’s “Breathing Light,” this closing track stands out for it’s mostly Scriptural lyrics.

As can be seen, In the Midst of Lions has amazing, Scriptural, and faith-building lyrics that shine through the grungy death metal. These above reasons make ITMOL one of the best bands in the genre, in my opinion. ITMOL has managed to deliver another outstanding project, one that every Christian heavy metal fan should add to their collection!

Michael W. Smith: It's A Wonderful Christmas Review

I still have Michael W. Smith’s 1989 Christmas project simply titled Christmas. And yes, I still bring it out during the Christmas season! Michael released his second Christmas album, Christmastime nine years later in 1998, which featured his version of the Chris Rice hymn “Welcome to Our World.” Following the nine year pattern, Michael released his most recent Christmas album It’s A Wonderful Christmas in 2007. But what makes Michael W. Smith’s Christmas music special is two-fold. Number one, it’s classic. With orchestras, choirs, outstanding arrangements, and even some beloved carols mixed in with the newer tracks, he knows how to deliver a cheery Christmas album that brings back memories and excites the listener. But secondly, Michael keeps the focus on what the meaning of Christmas is supposed to be – that Jesus Christ came into the world as a baby to save sinners. It’s A Wonderful Christmas is another outstanding Christmas album!

You’ve probably heard “Christmas Angels” on Christian radio around Christmas time, as bells, strings, and soft piano open up the stunning chorus of the Christmas angels spreading the good tidings of great joy! A children’s choir perfectly compliment the glamorous Christmas single that builds at each turn.

The title track, sounding like a jolly old Christmas film is 5-minutes long, and you can’t help but reminisce about past Christmases with the amazing arrangement from The London Symphony Orchestra. You might even be tempted to watch some Christmas classics and sip on hot cocoa. Those are the emotions evicted through this moving orchestral arrangement.

“The Promise” speaks of the prophecies surrounding the coming of Christ. Michael W. Smith sings in this track, and piano, choirs, and strong orchestras make this track VERY powerful. “Song for the King” is a very soft instrumental, and violins help keep the sereneness that is easily felt through an honest listen.

Featuring Mandisa and a Christmas choir, “Christmas Day” is a charming track, speaking of the happy feeling that Christmas Day brings each year. Mandisa’s vocals were simply amazing in this track! Bagpipes help give “A Highland Carol” a very Celtic feel that is quite Christmassy and peaceful.

A set of three choirs give “Sing Noel, Sing Hallelujah” a wonderful, full feeling, although Michael himself does not sing in this track. “What Child is This?” follows, mostly piano, but does have a pennywhistle that makes this arrangement very simple and beautiful.

“Son of God” is amazingly beautiful with choirs singing “Gloria, alleluiah” while “Audrey’s Gift” is a simple piano chorus with soft highs and lows. And lastly, soft orchestras come into play with “All Year Long,” a Christmas wish that peace, joy, and happiness would be found all year round, and not just at Christmas.

It’s classicalness, outstanding orchestra arrangements, and Christ-centeredness makes It’s A Wonderful Christmas a phenomenal Christmas project, one that you can have playing in the background during the Christmas season, or play loudly when needing a little extra Christmas cheer. Michael W. Smith knows how to deliver the Christmas spirit very well!

Erica Lane: A Merry Little Christmas Review

If you’ve never heard the name Erica Lane before, the A Merry Little Christmas EP is a fantastic introduction. The former Miss Houston has had many successes over the past few years, including that of starring in JCTV’s Inspired Ambition TV series, and having her self-penned single “Angels in the Snow” featured in The Christmas Snow film. But it’s that Christmas single that headlines the new album from Lane, a heart-breaking, but hopeful tale of one who lost their father on Christmas eve, and finds hope through making angels in the snow. The EP also features five other glamorous singles, showcasing Erica’s amazing talent and beautiful voice.

“Silent” opens up the EP, very classical sounding, and more so because of Erica’s gentle vocals. “Sleigh Bells/Marshmallow Word” follows, sounding like a 50s Christmas film, very jolly and exciting. A duet, the fun feeling of “Sleigh Bells” was retained through this cover, though I may add that Erica’s vocals may be a little too nice for such a fun track as this! :)

The jazzy “Jingle Bells” is honestly not the best rendition of this track I have heard, probably sounding a little outdated, but does have the Christmas spirit in the piano. Then, mostly acoustic guitar, Erica Lane’s vocals match “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” perfectly, bringing a new richness to the beloved Christmas song.

The tear-jerking, slow and heart-breaking “Angels in the Snow” follows. And though it’s extremely sad, as it talks about losing a loved one and the fight for comfort in the midst of the tragedy, I also believe the track offers hope for the hurting by sympathizing with the pain and grief. And lastly, the slower “Saved Tonight” has a slight futuristic feel to it, talking about the glamour of Christmas, the cheer, the fire, the story-telling, the singing, the snowing, and all the rest. But it goes a step further (and so do Erica Lane’s vocals!) to speak of how the unspeakable gift of Jesus Christ has saved us.

Erica Lane’s vocals are amazing, and the A Merry Little Christmas EP is a great one. You’ll hear some upbeat, cheery Christmas carols, but new and original, plus the tear-jerking “Angels In the Snow.” It’s got a little of everything for the Christmas season, so do yourself a favor and check out the EP!

Beckah Shae: Emmanuel Review

Beckah Shae is one of my favorite artists and top inspirations. Her Scripture-packed music reaches lives everywhere, and the message of her past two successful records Destiny and Life – to see the world through God’s eyes – is one that continues to make Beckah special. So what could be better than a Christmas album from this stellar female-vocalist? Emmanuel is a perfect, cheery Christmas album!

A short A Cepella opening, “O Come All Ye Faithful” is very melodic with stunning harmonies, singing through the beloved carol once. “Christmas Love” features cheery piano and Christmas bells that set the Christmas mood very well. Speaking of how it all comes down to love, a piano-break for “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” is perfect, making this a simply fantastic track.

“Angels (We Have Heard On High)” slows things down, but the deep and serious tone, mixed again with Christmas bells and Beckah’s angelic vocals are terrific. “Kadosh (Holy One)” is simply beautiful, soaking in just what love Christ gave us on that first Christmas. “Do You Hear What I Hear” also follows, very stellar, mostly because of Beckah’s AMAZING vocals.

An exciting instrumental version of “Carol of the Bells” serves as an intermission, but was possibly my favorite track off the whole record! The booming drums, piano melody combinations, and of course, the wonderful Christmas bells all mix perfectly. It’s also definitely one of the most upbeat renditions I’ve heard of this single too. Kudos to “Shoc” on this great instrumental! :)

Beckah Shae’s amazing vocals match “O Holy Night” absolutely perfectly, very angelic and harmonizing. Next, the title track is Beckah’s cover of “O Come, O Come Emmanuel,” in which electronic effects added to Beckah’s vocals combine with the serene music for another wonderful Christmas carol. Seriously, Beckah Shae does only the best!

“Merry Christmas Baby” and “Most Beautiful Time of the Year,” the Christmas singles from Emmanuel, follow as my personal favorite set of songs from this wonderful Christmas album. They are perfect in every way – jolly piano and Christmas bells mixed with Beckah’s unmatched vocals. They also do a great job of getting the listener in to the Christmas mood!

Closing the album is “Because He’s Born,” a slower piano track that contemplates just how much Christ gave us by coming to this earth for us. We also hear an adorable clip of Beckah’s daughter Joy Shiri singing “Happy Birthday Jesus.”

All in all, Emmanuel is an amazing Christmas project! There’s no one who can deliver Christmas carols better than Beckah Shae. Her stunning vocals, the choice of wonderful carols and originals, plus the Christmas cheer the album offers are all fantastic!

Jason Bare: Have You Heard Review

Jason Bare released his album Beautiful Design earlier this year, with the successful #1 Christmas single “For The First Time.” Now, Jason releases his first Christmas project titled Have You Heard? With five Christmas songs and carols, Have You Heard is a fantastic Christmas album, a must-have for the Christmas season.

A children’s choir opens up the album on a heavenly note, as piano and Jason’s magnificent vocals make up “Have You Heard?” imagining the glory of that first Christmas. This wonderful track then builds up a key, and Jason’s vocals are held out, making for a simply spectacular opening track. And with much description, “Night When Christ Was Born” speaks of the hope that was born on that night, and how it changed the world in one second – another heavenly Christmas song.

Jason Bare’s cover of “What Child is This?” is one of the best I have heard yet. The haunting piano and faint techno drums combine perfectly with Jason’s very flexible vocals. He changes the melody of the chorus and revamps it slightly, but the core remains the same. Strings also come in later, setting one in the Christmas mood like no other carol quite can. “A Way In A Manger,” with a powerful duet and choral effects, speaks of the mystery that God would send His Son in the form of a baby, who would make a way for us to have peace with God. And lastly, “For the First Time,” a very timeless reminder of what God’s love did for us on that first night, closes the album perfectly.

I have no hesitation in saying that Jason Bare’s Have You Heard Christmas EP is one of the best Christmas albums you could add to your collection! It’s a glorious and heavenly collection of Christmas songs that contemplate the gift of Jesus and what His love has done for us.

Jesus Culture: Awakening -- Live From Chicago Review

Jesus Culture is finally back with their anticipated sixth project, titled Awakening: Live from Chicago. Recorded on August 3-5 at Chicago’s own Allstate Arena, the double-CD album with a total of 16 tracks, will have you worshiping along and soaking in the presence of God that flows through the speakers.

The raw worship project opens with “Awaken Me” (sung by Jesus Culture’s Chris Quilala), a cry that God would shine His light on us and cause this generation to wake up from their slumber. The pounding drums definitely accompanied the high-energy opening track well, which is followed by Kim Walker-Smith’s “Father of Lights” and “Perfect Love” (a reprise). They reminds us that love has a name and a voice, called Jesus. In this set of songs, we also hear Kim encourage the audience to shout out to God what’s on their heart and sing to Him a new song. Hardly ever do you hear that kind of admonition in Christian music anymore – already you can sense the presence of God that is present at Jesus Culture’s meetings.

The timeless and simple “Break Every Chain” is very powerful, simply reminding us that “there is power in the name of Jesus to break every chain.” Hearing the live audience shout out along is always very inspiring. The energetic “Glorious” speaks of the majesty of God, while the slower but beautiful “My Everything” speaks of finding contentment in God alone – that He is all we need. Very worshipful, this track extends for over nine minutes.

“Nothing But the Blood” follows naturally but very serenely, as you can feel the unity of the whole crowd singing out the familiar lyrics of this hymn at the top of their lungs. Next, a freedom song, “Dance” speaks of getting up and moving when the worship starts, and asks the question, “Why should I be still when the music starts, Lord?” This worship song closes CD 1 on an upbeat note.

CD 2 opens up with “He Is Faithful,” a timeless declaration of the faithfulness of God, while the slower “Burning Ones” is a declaration that, we, the people of God, are passionate for more of God. It continues with the “Holy Are You (Burning Ones Reprise),” very worshipful and passionate.

A song of complete surrender, aptly titled “Surrender” follows, but the highlight is the powerful line, “Your love makes it worth it all,” as the song emphasizes there is no one greater than Jesus Christ. “We are Hungry” and “Fill Me Up” both follow aptly, the first more strong then the second, which is slower. But both have a powerful message of craving more of God’s presence in our lives, which stands out through this record and Jesus Culture’s music as a whole.

The upbeat “Holding Nothing Back” commits to giving God every part of ourselves for His usage, while the album closes with Jake Hamilton’s “The Anthem.” In this closing track, we are reminded that God is calling us all for a special purpose: “And now I hear the Spirit calling me/ wake up child/ it’s your turn to shine you/ you were born for such a time as this.”

Jesus Culture is one of the most passionate worship bands you will find out there. It’s obvious they put their hearts into the music they play and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, but listening to it unfold on this live project is an exciting and inspiring experience. Awakening: Live From Chicago is a heart-felt, worshipful album!

Movie Review: Game of Your Life

Proctor & Gamble/Walmart are back with the next installment in the Family Movie Night series, Game of Your Life, airing on NBC Friday, December 2nd at 8 PM (EST!)

In this action-packed film, gamer Zach Taylor receives a scholarship to DIGD, the Digital Institude of Game Design. It appears his dream has come true, until he finds out that the university's freshman project threatens his removal before three month's end -- that is, unless he can manage to pass the test!

Zach soon teams up with Phillip and Donald, his roomates who probably have too many ridiculous arguments on their hands. He also manages to convince an old friend, Sara, to join their team. Sara proves to be quite the leader of the group, as her confidence and boldness hold the team together.

Soon however, trouble breaks out as Zach is offered $10,000 to help a university professor perfect his games. This top secret deal, seeming too good to be true, consumes all of Zach's time and energy, but goes a long way to help him be able to provide for his single dad back at home. Because this prevents him from being able to work on the group's project, and comes against the rules of the university's freshman test, his best friend Sara threatens to remove him from the group unless he gets his act together.

Will Zach get removed from the group and be forced to give up his dream of gaming-design? Will he be able to restore his relationship with his friends and help them pass the near-impossible freshmen test? You'll discover the importance of making the right choices, no matter what the pressure may be.

Game of Your Life is definitely more fast-paced and action-packed than most of the previous Family Movie Nights, making for an exciting film! The choice of characters for the film was perfect as well, especially the awkward roomates Zach has to put up with, Phillip and Donald. Their childish behavior is at times ridiculous and other times down-right hilarious. They definitely make things unexpected at times!

There's a bit of suspense as well! Viewers of Family Movie Night get a glimpse at what is keeping Zack from making the right choices, while his roomates struggle to find out why he behaves unlike himself.

I also really enjoyed the fact that Zach respected his father's advice half-way through the video. Zach returns home for a bit of time to rethink his actions, and his father encourages him to make the right choices and stand up for his roomates, no matter what that may cost him. Zach took his father's advice to heart, even though it was difficult for him to undue his foolish choices. Not often do you find videos like this that highlight listening to the advice of parents.

So all in all, Game of Your Life is a very exciting, action-packed, family friendly movie, hilarious and suspense-filled. Kudos to Proctor & Gamble/Walmart for another great film! Don't forget to watch the premier on NBC Friday, December 2nd at 8 PM EST! You won't want to miss this one.

I love Black Friday! :) Though I've only been out once in my life on this crazy shopping day, I love the cheer of the Thanksgiving weekend, and how people start preparing for Christmas. Happy Thanksgiving!!

It seems so hard to believe that another year has come and gone. SO many amazing things have happened this year that I can only give God all the credit for. And you know, in times when everything is going wrong, it's hard to find only a handful of things to give God thanks for. But when a day like today comes along, we realize just how much we can be thankful for! I'd like to reflect on a few things I'm very thankful for, but since this is a musik site, it will be a little different than a typical list.

For one, I am so incredibly grateful for the music and ministry of Aaron Shust. Not only has his music meant so much to me lately, God also blessed me the opportunity to meet the one and only! It was so much more than I could ever have asked for. The Called to Love Tour was simply amazing, and I even had the opportunity to interview all three artists there (Downhere, Aaron Shust, and Jason Gray). I honestly cannot put into words how much Aaron's music means to me, as at times I wonder if he wrote his songs five years ago for me today -- they are literally that close to an accurate reflection of me.

Guess who this is? ;)

Secondly, the ministry of Beckah Shae! You don't have to know me that well to know that I absolutely love Beckah Shae! Not only is her music FANTASTIC, but it's also mostly Scripture, which is so awesome. I love that I can put on her music and be building myself up, while listening to fun music. I hope to be able to meet Beckah Shae very soon! (And look for a review of her Christmas CD very soon!)

The City Harmonic! These guys were actually the second band I ever met. I had the chance to hang out with them a bit, which was a blast, and they came within an hour away! But in addition, their music is simply stunning... heavenly! There is not one single song that is not my favorite from these guys, and their new album I Have a Dream is fantastic!

There are a million more bands I could explain why their music inspires me, or is encouraging to me, but one of my favorite bands of all times is... *drumroll please* Sixteen Cities! Yeah, you knew that was coming if you've been a reader of my blog for a while now. I was an instant fan with the release of their Centricity Music debut, and I had the honor (thank God!) of meeting them not once, but twice this year! I even had the chance to interview them in person at their show in Glens Falls, NY. What an awesome group this is. I can't wait for the release of their new single after Christmas!

There are many more things I'm thankful for -- my concert buddies (AKA siblings ;)), all the companies that support this site, all the artists and bands that promote this site through sharing my links on Twitter and Facebook! Those of you who have given me wonderful feedback on my video interviews, my God for His provision and blessing, and YOU for reading this right now. Thanks, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!

Soul Sister Sally: Ready to Go Review

I think I speak for all of Casting Crowns fans when I say that we were disappointed with the news that drummer Andy Williams was stepping down from the band. Brian Scoggins replaced him, and Casting Crowns has since released two more critically-acclaimed albums. But good news for fans of Andy’s – he’s in another band! It’s called Soul Sister Sally, an Indie band that also features his wife Kelly and two other members. The band surely has much to offer, especially lyrically, but the fun music and the strong vocals all combine very nicely in Soul Sister Sally’s debut Ready to Go.

The energetic “Fly” with plenty of lead guitar, opens the album, a prayer that we would be able to fly and soar with God. Following, “Perfection” has a swing rock feel, but the highlight is definitely the Scripture-rich lyrics that remind us that though life is not perfect, God promises to lead us and guide us through it all: “You’re life may not be perfect/ He never promised that it would/ He only said ‘Let Me direct it/ I’ll make it work out like it should…’”

With desperate lyrics, “Day 3” is a prayer for restoration, while the slightly mellower “Just a Girl” is very comparable to Addison Road – similar vocals, music, and lyrics of being someone in progress who desires to change the world. “Neverland” has soft vocals that make its sereneness a standout, as its peaceful lyrics speak of being in total peace with God one day in Heaven: “Neverland, joy will never end in neverland/ old is just a word in neverland/ laugh until you can’t breathe/ sing until you can’t speak/ run until you fall asleep in Neverland.”

The rocking “Brilliant Life” addresses the fact that we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us, and we have one chance to do things right, while “Vain” speaks of the battle between us wanting more of God and wanting control over our life. It then makes a decision in the bridge: “As I look into the mirror, I’m disgusted at my face/ I want to be just life You, so I learned about Your grace.”

And for all those who pretend to be something they’re not, “Unmask Me” is an encouraging prayer also set to fun Indie music. It asks God to reveal to us what He really wants for us to be, and what we could be if we were to live freely. “Torn” speaks of needing healing from brokenness and longing to be free, while the album closes with “Moment,” which encourages the listener to spend every minute wisely: ”And I know You care about the way I live and how I spend my time/ Life is a breath, with every one I take, another moment’s gone, another chance to live. “

I’m not always a big fan of Indie rock, but Soul Sister Sally is an exception! It’s definitely great to know that Andy Williams from Casting Crowns is a part of this band, but also highlights are the exceptional lyrics, strong vocals, and definitely the fun music! This is a great project!

Seventh Day Slumber: The Anthem of Angels Review

Seventh Day Slumber is one awesome Christian rock band! It’s one thing that they don’t shy away from boldly presenting the gospel through their strong rock, but it’s another that they offer healing for the broken heart in Jesus. And after a successful lineup of albums, Seventh Day Slumber resorts to what they are known for best – heartfelt worship with a slight mix of grunge. It’s these elements that compose the band’s latest album, The Anthem of Angels.

The beautiful piano adds to the haunting opening of “Wasted Life,” which soon explodes into a heavy rock track with very catchy grunge guitars. Of course, Joseph Rojas’ unique and manly vocals are an immediate sensation, as he sings with his band of the wasted life we were all heading, until Christ rescued us: “A wasted life was the road that I was on/ I was running blind into the unknown/ just in the nick of time/ You found me at my worse and brought me home.” Everything about this opening track is perfect – it may even be hard for the diehard fan to switch to the next track!

The awesome radio single “Love Came Down” takes its place next, an anthem highlighting the love of God and how nothing compares. It’s a song like this that find Seventh Day Slumber at their best – a very nice combination of worship and rock, plus lyrics that are easily memorable and will have the listener singing along in no time. On the same note, except a little more serious lyrically, “One Mistake” talks about our tendency to feel guilty and like we are only one mistake away from being thrown out of grace. It definitely resonates with the listeners, especially the phenomenal bridge, that describes how God wraps His arms around us and calls us beloved and we are not just one mistake away. It also goes a step further to remind the listener that, in line with God’s Word, He will lead us every day into the person He desires for us to be.

“Addicted to My Pain” is another fine example of the adrenaline presented in Seventh Day Slumber’s music. First beginning with piano, and then turning into a track that is totally upbeat, Joseph’s strong vocals present the predicament of desiring to hold on to our pain while crying out for change. “Never Too Far Gone” also addresses our shortcomings, reminding us that God’s mercy for us is unending.

And while “Pieces” is an upbeat prayer for God to take the pieces of our life and make us whole, “Crash” speaks of the desire to dive into the presence of God and know Him like no other. “Back Where I Began” slows down a bit, but is a very heartfelt worship song, lamenting our troubles, and daydreaming of the day when we are found in the arms of God and see Him as He is. Honestly, as I can totally relate to the message of this track, Seventh Day Slumber did a fantastic job of relaying this message through their music.

“Knows My Name” rocks, but also offers immense encouragement in the fact that all of heaven knows our name, while “My Life,” full of catchy guitar riffs, is a song of thanksgiving just for life. And lastly, the band’s version of the modern-day hymn “How He Loves” follows. It’s not much different from the popularized David Crowder Band version, but its definitely great to hear Seventh Day Cover such a wonderful worship anthem, and it serves as a great follow up for their previous worship album.

I cannot say it enough – The Anthem of Angels is a phenomenal album! It’s not very often we hear a rock album that keeps the focus on God while delivering awesome, rocking tracks. The heartfelt and relatable lyrics, plus lead singer Joseph Rojas’ vocals are an added bonus!

Everfound: Dawn In the Eyes EP Review

I love listening to family bands, but what about a band of brothers straight from Russia? That’s what makes Everfound stick out in addition to their heavily melodic rock, soothing melodies, and outstanding vocals. And their latest EP, Dawn In the Eyes already has two hit singles! Impressive as that is, one listen to Everfound’s new EP will instantly leave you coming back for more!

“Disappear” sets the stage with piano rock, as it speaks of the struggles of quitting and continuing, but it also serves as an encouraging reminder that no matter what we go through, we can’t make God disappear. On the same note comes the somewhat haunting “She Said,” which has already become a huge hit for the Russian band of brothers. Speaking of being deceived by a girl who promises love forever, it’s serious as it speaks of the evil that exists in situations such as this.

Almost on a lyrical U-turn, “Someone” states that there is always Someone – namely God – who will be there for us when the world is crashing down on us. This middle track on Dawn In the Eyes is absolutely amazing, especially the way it builds throughout. “To Die For” stands out for its catchy lyrics, while “Are You With Me?” closes up the album with a bit of a swing rock note. In this track, Everfound gives common scenarios of problems that we see go wrong around us each day, and challenges the listener to step up to the plate and make a chance, stating that “the future is worth fighting for.”

This short EP is simply amazing! This band of four Russian brothers can make some of the best music in the piano rock genre, plus the honesty in their lyrics, the amazing vocals, and all else combines for a fantastic project. Check out Everfound today. You will not be disappointed!

Josh Caterer: The Heart of Christmas EP Review

Josh Caterer is best known for being the lead singer of Smoking Pipes, but now he returns with a five-song Christmas EP, titled The Heart of Christmas, set for release November 15th. This delightful EP is timeless, and its fun, country twist makes it quite a sensation.

The peaceful title track opens things up, and Josh’s country voice fits the contemporary country style perfectly. This opening track reminds the listener that the fact that “God sent His only Son” is the heart of Christmas, and the reason we celebrate the season. More upbeat musically, “The Baby From Bethlehem” tells the Christmas story from the view of one of the shepherds out in the field, as he hears the good tidings of great joy and goes to see the newborn King. Clearly, the timeless country track and unique view of the story is very enjoyable.

The beautiful, guitar-strumming version of “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” is also wonderful, though Josh changes up the melody, one that you will find yourself singing along with ease after one listen. Next, Josh covers the children’s classic “Conroy the Gingerbread Man.” You can’t help but smile as you listen to the magical tale of the gingerbread cookie waking up and hiding from those who want to eat him. Also humorous, “Austin Bound” closes The Heart of Christmas, speaking of being warm during the Christmas season by moving to Austin over Chicago or other cold cities.

I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from Josh Caterer, but The Heart of Christmas is a wonderful Christmas EP. It’s timeless and creative, plus the country twist that was added was most certainly enjoyable. Check out this EP if you’re looking for something innovative this Christmas season. I guarantee you’ll enjoy it!

Anticipating Seventh Day Slumber's New Album

Seventh Day Slumber is finally releasing their new album The Anthem of Angels on November 15th! I personally have been waiting for this release for a couple months now, and was disappointed each time the slated release date was postponed. I had the chance to hear a sneak-peak, and I'm going to say that this is easily their best project yet! Whereas their first several BEC albums are more on the rock side, the band rides on the success of Take Everything with a powerful album that offers hope for the broken, but they also throw in the grunge we love from them. And perhaps most inspiring about Seventh Day Slumber is their love for Jesus that resounds from each song. It's definitely an amazing project... go get it November 15th! :)

Newsboys: God's Not Dead Review

Newsboys have been planning another worship project ever since Michael Tait took over the role of lead singer back in 2009. And now, following the success of their runaway Born Again album, God’s Not Dead is a bold declaration that Jesus Christ is alive and changing lives each day! Tossing pop, rock, and worship into the melting pot, the Newsboys’ latest twelve-track album is complete with a few originals as well as some popular worship anthems.

Michael Tait’s soft vocals break the silence with “The King is Coming,” which soon builds into a track very much like what you would expect from the Newsboys. Speaking from Old Testament prophecies, we are encouraged to “open up the doors, our King is coming.” Clearly, the Newsboys know how to deliver powerful worship anthems. The title track quickly follows suite, bringing in guest vocal talent from Kevin Max. This Daniel Bashta worship track was covered surprisingly excellent from Newsboys, especially by the power that Michael Tail knows how to throw in when needed. However, besides his background vocals, you wouldn’t even notice Kevin Max if you didn’t know he was in this track, but he does have a role later in the album, with the closing track “I Am Second.”

“Your Love Never Fails” isn’t a track I would have expected Newsboys to do that great of a job covering, but it didn’t turn out bad by any means! In fact, the more fun twist added by the jumpy pop and the enthusiastic “ooohs” during the breaks combined well. “Here We Stand,” an upbeat cry for more of God and standing in awe of His presence and “Savior of the World” also follow, both declaring the majesty of God.

With a strong string intro, “Forever Reign” follows, at first sounding a bit weak, but building very quickly into the worship song we’ve come to know and love from Hillsong. Following, “More Than Enough” could totally be a Christmas track, speaking of the day when love was born, and celebrating the fact that Jesus is more than enough to meet all of our needs.

The beloved Gateway Worship anthem “Revelation Song” follows a bit stronger than the original, though in my opinion, wasn’t the best track on the album – certainly not bad, though. “Pouring it Out For You” is a steady track of surrender, exclaiming that we cannot get enough of God, after which comes “Mighty To Save,” the same track from Born Again. Personally, I thought that was a bit cheap, but it’s still a fantastic track, and probably the best rendition I’ve heard of that song yet. :)

With an acoustic beginning and a fun whistling intro, “All the Way” is easily one of the best tracks off God’s Not Dead, a track that uses a bit of repetition to declare a heartfelt desire for God to have complete control over our lives: “We’re going all the way/ we’re going to walk by faith/ giving You everything, everything, everything/ We going all the way!” Finally, the highly energetic “I Am Second,” my number one favorite off Newsboys’ latest worship album, again features Kevin Max, speaking of how “we are second to one,” Jesus Christ. Especially enjoyable from the chorus is the memorable line, “I’m second to One, He’s second to nothing.” After this, Kevin Max jumps in with his flexible vocals that make for a short 2/3 dcTalk reunion. “I Am Second” is a track that will have you playing the album all over again!

I didn’t really know if a worship project was the best move for Newsboys after shocking their fans with the announcement that Peter Furler was stepping down, and then delivering Born Again. But it turns out, it was! They mix the traditional Newsboys sounds with some extra strings and worship to make a superb worship project featuring many of your favorites!

Montell Jordan/Victory World Music: Shake Heaven Review

You know him from the blockbuster mainstream radio singles “This is How We Do It” and “Let’s Ride,” but earlier this year, Montell Jordan released “Shake Heaven,” the new single featuring stellar vocals from Beckah Shae. And now Victory World Music, the church at which Montell Jordan is a worship leader, releases their new project tiled after the popular single. And though you might be expecting another typical worship project from a church worship band, that is not the case. The diversion of races stirred with the eclectic mix of genres makes for a project that will turn your idea of worship upside-down, and teach you what worship really is – a lifestyle of sacrifice to our God, not a particular genre of music.

The soft, electronic “Yeshua” opens up the Shake Heaven album, speaking of the power of the name of Yeshua, and the fact that we are now called to preach the gospel to every creature under heaven. Beckah Shae also appears in this opening track, most notably over the verse, where her vocals were simply stunning. The more upbeat dance/pop “Let’s Go” speaks of being a blessing to God by getting up and dancing for Him. It’s quite fun musically, and definitely has an excellent message that is lacking in most Christian music.

Beckah Shae again appears in the strong title-track speaking of shaking heaven through out loud praises to our God. This time, she is a little more predominant in the track with her supportive vocals over the chorus, and it’s very easy to see why Beckah Shae fans have fallen in love with this single. The catchy and repetitive bass notes are very enjoyable as well. Electronic beats and effects make up “The One,” which also features gospel singer Martha Munizzi in a song of praise to God for saving us and giving us new life in Him.

Beautiful pianos and echoing drums beats compose the more worshipful “Mountains,” a powerful reminder that when things go wrong, we can look to the mountains where our help comes from. It also builds very strongly by the end, making it all the more powerful. “Hungry” follows suite, very still, craving more of God and seeking to be shaped after God’s own heart.

Outstanding harmonies, overlapping vocals, and steady drums make “Breathe” a standout, and one of my personal favorites from the project. “These Hands” is innovative, speaking of how the same hands that hung the planets in the universe also hold us, while “You Are” remains on the slower side of things. It’s actually cool to know that Montell actually wrote this track to his wife, but revamped it for this album to be a love song to God, and Christian Lewis’s vocals fit the part well.

“Lifter of My Head” is encouraging, reminding us once again, that God will be with us through the hard times of life, while “When I See You” offers a bit of a hip-hop sentiment, speaking of the unapproachable glory of God. “Usable,” mostly piano, is a half song/ half prayer that God would make us usable to Him and help us not to be afraid of following the call He has placed on our life. And lastly, the surprisingly upbeat “F.L.H.” is a hidden track that features Byron “Mr. Talkbox” Chambers,” speaking of the “friends, liars, and heirs.”

The genre blend of Victory World Music is unbelievable! Shake Heaven is an album that those who love to worship God, but aren’t particularly fond of today’s defined worship genre will definitely want to pick up. R&B, pop, contemporary and more are all combined for this album, but it’s worshipful and heart-felt nevertheless! In addition, fans of Beckah Shae will probably love this project, both for the genre and for her special appearances.

‘Tis the season to be jolly, and what better way to get into the Christmas mood than through Christmas music from Hillsong? Born is the King is Hillsong’s third Christmas project, featuring eight songs both original and traditional.

Cheery bells open up the EP in “The Westward Procession,” followed by “Joy to the World.” You’ve heard plenty of renditions of this carol, but banjos and ebullient vocals help give this track a new spin. The angelic vocals are also excellent for this Christmas carol. The title track, “Born is the King (It’s Christmas)” almost doesn’t even sound like Hillsong! It’s an upbeat pop track with strong guitars and a fun message of rejoicing in the day the Lord has made – Christmas!

As soon as I heard “Emmanuel” from God He Reigns, I thought it was a perfect Christmas carol, and Darlene Zschech offers an all-new, more acoustic rendition of it for Born is the King. This original is definitely welcome, celebrating the fact that Emmanuel will never let go of us. “We Three Kings” is also mostly acoustic, altering the melody slightly, but delivering the well-known tale of the three kings of Orient following the Star to the newborn King.

“O Come Let Us Adore Him” is a modification of “O Come All Ye Faithful,” focusing on the last line of the carol and building nicely for its arrival, while “O Holy Night” appears very angelic with triple harmonies and a serene backing. And lastly, the serene “Silent Night” concludes the Born is the King EP, very traditional and peaceful.

Overall, it doesn’t totally sound like a Hillsong album, but it’s a great Christmas project nevertheless. There’s a nice mix of traditional carols with originals, as well as a playful set, too!

Leigh Nash: Hymns & Sacred Songs Review

It’s been five years since her last solo project, but now the legendary Leigh Nash returns with her latest project Hymns & Sacred Songs, one of three records in the works on Kingsway Records. By offering her own renditions of beloved hymns and revamping others, Leign Nash delivers a powerful and inspiring worship album that will have you singing along in no time. The organic and timeless feel is an added bonus!

The simplistic bluegrass “Savior, Like A Shepherd (Blessed Jesus)” kicks off the album, a prayer for guidance through life, after which comes “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” to which Leigh Nash created her own melody. Very harmonic, this golden version of the beloved hymn will have listeners singing along in no time, as easily as they do to the original!

“Isaiah 55,” a nice contemporary track, speaks of how there is nothing our Lord cannot do, after which comes the heart-felt “O Heart Bereaved and Lonely,” a powerful Fanny Crosby hymn that Leigh adapted the melody of, but kept the lyrics the same. She also perfectly adds a heavenly touch of piano and stunning harmonies.

Leigh’s rendition of Keith & Kristyn Getty’s “The Power of the Cross” follows, probably not quite as good as the original, but nevertheless, her heavenly vocals and serene music definitely do it justice. “Give Myself To You” has a more upbeat, pop tempo than the majority of the album, in a wonderful track of surrender to God, while “Come, Ye Thankful People, Come” is the first original off the album. It was quite surprising to know Leigh Nash wrote it, as it almost sounds like one of the powerful hymns you’ve heard growing up in church! It’s a blissful track, praying that the Lord of the Harvest would come and take us home to be with Him.

“Blessed Redeemer” follows suite, followed by “Out of My Bondage,” an acoustic guitar-based track celebrating finding freedom in Christ. Aaron Keyes’ powerful worship anthem, “Song of Moses” is covered by Leigh next, and as one of my favorite songs by Aaron, I can safely say she does a wonderful job of covering it, though it is more lulling than the original.

Finally, a nice set of tracks close Leigh Nash’s Hymns & Sacred Songs album – “Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above” and “Be Still My Soul.” The first, a Charles Wesley hymn, is a timeless praise track, and the nice touch of strong electric guitars certainly added a ton to this rendition, and Leigh’s building vocals were definitely another highlight. Finally, “Be Still My Soul” is a poetic and heavenly closing, commanding our soul to praise the Lord at all times.

Leigh Nash’s Hymns & Sacred Songs album is her first solo project in five years, and she most certainly did a bang-up job with it! The glorious hymns, Leigh’s angelic vocals, plus the serene music and melodies combine to form a beautiful and heavenly project!

Everfound: A Band of Russian Brothers

Have you heard of Everfound? If you haven't, it's about time you learn their name! They are a band of brothers from Russia, and you will immediately fall in love with the fresh tunes this group has to offer. They just released their new video for "Disappear," which is featured on their latest release Dawn In Their Eyes, and let me tell you -- this video makes me want to check these guys out on tour! And speaking of tours, the guys are about to head out on their Rock the Halls 2011 Christmas Tour! A few dates are already announced, but more are coming up on the band's official site. I'm hoping these guys make it to upstate New York soon. :)

Movie Review Friday: Christmas Lodge DVD

I love heart-warming Christmas movies. This is exactly what Christmas Lodge is, another film presented by the world-renown "Painter of Light" Thomas Kinkade. And you know that every time you observe a gorgeous Thomas Kinkade painting, you can't help but imagine what's going on in the surrounding he depicts... well, this film helps you imagine just that!

Christmas Lodge tells the story of Mary, a very successful businesswoman. However, success is also stressful on Mary, who often resorts to the mountains where she grew up to soak in the quietness and fresh air. While she is taking a brisk walk through the mountain forests, she meets a young girl, named Cathleen, who twisted her ankle and needs help getting back home. Mary is pleasantly surprised to find out that this girl is the daughter of an old friend, Jack, whom she grew up with. He currently lives at the "Christmas Lodge" that Mary's family resorted to every Christmas. Remembering Mary, Jack invites her in for the night. However, upon entering, Mary can't help but notice that the old lodge is running down. Certainly Jack and his rambunctious daughter can't fix the place up by themselves, so Mary puts her talents together to seek a contractor to raise funds for the renovation of the beloved lodge with the hope that it will be completed and ready for guests by Christmas. Can she fufill her sickly grandfather's wish for one last Christmas in the lodge, all the while finding a family in Jack and his daughter Cathleen?

I really liked the Christmas Lodge film! It was very heartwarming with its standout message of what a family is supposed to be. The plot was very creative, adding in humor and Christmas cheer into this romantic film.

Most importantly, however, the film is very family-friendly, even receiving a G-rating and a "Family Approved" seal from the Dove Foundation. This is definitely one great Christmas film, as I enjoyed the whole plot from start to finish.

I recently came across a band that plain out ROCKED! Their name is Echoes the Fall, and after watching them play just four songs live in concert, I purchased both of their albums.

Echoes the Fall is straight out of Phoenix, Arizona. They released their debut Bloodline in 2009, which featured the single "Break Away" that received critical acclaim, and for which they filmed the music video. But in summer of this year, the lead singer David Mackey was replaced by Jeromy Moorehead from the band One Minute Halo. They recorded a four-song self-titled EP under the new lineup, and recently headed out on RED's Kill the Machine Tour which also featured Icon For Hire and Brian "Head" Welch. (That's where I saw them! :) )

I love the honesty of Echoes the Fall's lyrics, which talk mainly about becoming a new person and leaving your past behind. I wanted to share the music video "Break Away" with you, so you can see that Echoes the Fall really does rock! I personally like the new lead singer better, and I'll be reviewing the EP in the near future. John Mark McMillan: Economy Review

It’s no question that John Mark McMillan is a polished singer/songwriter. All one has to do is take a listen to the beloved “How He Loves” that has been permeating church worship sets recently. What is the question, however, is what will John Mark McMillan’s album theme be this time? As his debut Integrity project The Medicine focused on death and resurrection, his highly-anticipated follow-up, Economy looks at the picture from a slightly different angle – things may not be the way they are supposed to here on earth, but we can find hope and rest in our God.

John Mark McMillan’s deep, country vocals break the silence with the strong opening track, “Sheet of Night,” celebrating how we as Christians are reflections of the light of Christ in a dark world. With plenty of fill-ins and catchy melodies and guitar riffs, “Daylight” follows, with more of John Mark’s beloved metaphorical lyrics. Seeming to continue the message of the opening track “Sheet of Night,” we are reminded that “we live on the edge of darkness/ oh, but daylight is coming on.” Just from the two opening tracks, you can easily tell that this artist has increased his talents by many times, since his debut.

And while “Hearts Bleed” has a regretful feel to it, the slower but steady “Love You Swore” is a track of desperation, begging God to rescue us and help us discover what His love truly is. I also found the transitional “whoa”’s and John Mark’s building vocals throughout to add much to this poignant track. Also, the excellent, Scripture-rich “Murdered Son” accurately reflects gratitude for the indescribable gift of our Lord. Definitely a highlight off this album, “Murdered Son” is as powerful as his previous single “How He Loves,” describing the love of God like no other song could put it.

The title track, “Economy” is extremely clever, to say the least, speaking of our struggles in life, but how Jesus is so much more and can rescue us from that. Especially enjoyable is the repetitious chorus that will have listeners singing along in no time: “But I believe you can overcome my economy/ You can dig me out of the grave.” No doubt the strong contemporary track with a country twist will be a hit for the listener as well! Following perfectly, “Who is This?” is entirely taken out of Psalm 24, commanding the doors of your soul to open up to the King of Glory.

The amazing and tremendously powerful “Sins Are Stones” speaks of how Jesus has washed away our sins, and now they are like stones on the bottom of the Sea of Forgetfulness. Almost a part-two to “Economy” lyrically, we are strongly reminded that “by the blood of a son I have overcome the grave.” Periodic sessions of simple music and angelic vocals make this track very touching.

“Chemicals” is very lonely-sounding, and rightly so, for its lyrics perfectly compliment the serene guitar-strumming. And finally, “Seen A Darkness” perfectly draws to a close John Mark McMillan’s Economy CD on an upbeat note, summarizing the message of the whole album with this overpowering chorus: “The valley of the shadow knows our name/ we have seen a night/ but we have seen the day/ dressed in the blood of love’s hot veins/ we have overcome/ yeah, we have overcome.”

John Mark McMillan has proved himself to be a talented musician yet again! The concept of this album – that Jesus has overcome the grave, forgiven us, and we will one day see His glory – is clearly evident, and its fantastic to hear that message intertwined throughout. I can safely say that John Mark McMillan’s Economy CD is a couple notches up from his debut! If you loved The Medicine, you won’t be able to get enough of Economy!

Stellar Kart Changes

I know a lot of you have been asking about changes in SK over the last couple months. I will try to clear a few things up for you. :) The biggest news is that my bros Jordan and Brian have decided to leave the road and spend more time with their families. Brian, his wife Sarah, and baby girl Fiona have decided to move to Oklahoma City, go back to school and start a new chapter in their lives. Jordan, his wife Lauren, and their brand new baby girl Layla are back in sunny Phoenix where they can be close to family and friends. Lauren owns a hair salon and Jordan is still rocking Scarliet Clothing. We wish them all the best of luck and hope you all will too! Please continue to follow them on twitter and encourage them in their new ventures. :) Jo and Brian dedicated their lives to this band and that will never be forgotten.

I want you all to know that Stellar Kart has no plans of giving up, just moving forward. As many of you know, Nick Baumhardt has been playing guitar for us for over a year and produced the “A Whole New World EP.” Some of you also may recognize Jeremi Hough. He filled in on drums for us while Jordan was having his baby and is now taking over as our drummer. We are all getting into the studio next week to start working on the next Stellar Kart record! Please welcome these guys and show them love. :)

We’re excited about this new chapter in the life of Stellar Kart and hope that you guys love the new music that you’ll be hearing soon. :) Hope to see you soon out on the road!
