The title track begins the album nicely, as the strong strings accompany the reminder that God will never let go of us. The first single off Current, “We Should Run” follows with a tropical feel and beautiful harmonies. It also celebrates the day when we will see our Savior face to face and be celebrating in His presence.
With booming drums comes “Take it All,” a song of surrender and sacrifice to Jesus. The standout line “I will be found in You” proves to be encouraging. In addition, the choir effects are quite enjoyable. “Hope” is appropriately very hopeful, as Sarah’s soft vocals and the mild piano pop combine to celebrate the fact that we have hope even through life’s toughest times, because we know that one day we will be with Jesus where He is.
Booming drums and a toy piano sound make “Laughter” a fun track, speaking of staying in God’s presence, while “Galaxy Former” follows as a simple worship song. At first it has a classic old film soundtrack with ringing bells, making it a very fun listen, even though its lyrics are worshipful.
“Damaged” contemplates brokenness, stating “I don’t wanna be broken,” and builds up very nicely in the end, while “Hiding Place” finds a way to accentuate Sarah Macintosh’s angelic vocals. Based on Psalm 91, and the hiding place of God’s presence, “Hiding Place” is very refreshing.
“You’re Coming,” a very strong and powerful celebratory track of God’s coming back for His saints, is one of the definite highlights off Current, especially the anthem in the chorus. Following, “Calling, Calling” could easily be the soundtrack of heaven with the heavenly vocals and the slightly futuristic melody. “Joy Comes In” closes the album, mostly an acoustic track, remembering that joy comes in the morning, even when the night is dark.
After listening to Sarah Macintosh’s Integrity Records debut Current, Sarah is one of my new favorite worship leaders. Her musical creativity and willingness to write about the hope we can find in Jesus during any time of our life makes her both an artist that struggling Christians can play during the storms of life, and those experiencing triumph can celebrate to as well. Plus, you can’t go wrong with her amazing vocals!
