Peder Eide: Rescue Review

Critically-acclaimed Compassion artist Peder Eide has been making music for over 14 years and is now releasing his 14th studio album, Rescue. Donating a portion of the sales of this new CD to Compassion International, Peder’s new album is an eclectic album, making for an enjoyable listen for those who like variation. You’ll find songs of hope and worship as well as songs that encourage you to get up on your feet and make a difference in this world.

“Your Love is Better Than Life” is already an upbeat, catchy track speaking of our desperate need for God’s love, while “That’s What Family Does” takes a more of a rock side with strong electric guitars. It reminds the listeners what a family was designed to do: “lean into love/ lift each other up/ cheer each other on/ we do it all because that’s what family does.”

Slightly more mellow, “Nothing More, Nothing Less, Nothing Else” is framed after Philippians 2, and Paul’s debate that “for me to live is Christ, to die is gain.” Following is perhaps the most poignant track on the record, “Come to the Rescue,” a beautiful piano-based track that tells the horrific stories of children overseas who are homeless and needy. Really, all they want is a heart that cares enough to come to their rescue. This is definitely a moving track and call to action.

“Fun” brings back memories of the 90s, an upbeat swing track with catchy harmonies and “fun” lyrics of being totally free through God’s power, while the strong “You Are Good” is a very simple song of worship for the fact that God is good all the time. The complex melody was also quite enjoyable.

And, very apt for an album supporting Compassion International is “We are Not Orphans.” Peder Eide actually has adopted from Korea and Ethiopia in 2004 and 2008 respectively, so he knows firsthand the wonders of adoption and the immense love shown through it. This track is a wonderful reminder that “God will not change His mind/ He love us, is for us, adores us/ we are not orphans.” Almost on the same note musically, “You’re With Me” is a powerful reminder that we have nothing to fear, though we may be facing giants in our life, because God promises to never leave or forsake us.

We all know the traditional “This is My Father’s World,” and Peder’s version was very welcome, bringing in the serene reminder that God has all under control and He has made everything beautiful. And finally, the mostly piano “Take What I Have” is extremely peaceful as a great closing – a prayer that God would take us and make us more like Him till we reflect Him.

There’s a handful of fun upbeat tracks (“Fun,” “Your Love is Better Than Life”), some powerful choruses and worship tracks (“Take What I Have,” “You are Good”) and some touching reminders that we are not orphans any longer through Christ’s love and that we can make a change for those who are orphans (“Come to the Rescue,” “We are Not Orphans”). It’s definitely an album that gets better with every listen through! Be sure to go pick up this album and help support the work of Compassion International!
