Shannon Wexelberg: I Have a Song Review

After several tragedies struck, Discovery House artist Shannon Wexelberg found hope in the fact that God’s promises are always true. She also realized that she had a song to sing, the “melody of salvation” as she describes it. From that moment, her new album I Have A Song was birthed, bringing us eleven gorgeous worship songs.

The traditional “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” opens up I Have A Song on a slow note, and blends in to the Celtic-sounding “This Is the Day,” which shows off Shannon’s excellent ability to take a Psalm and turn it into a beautiful worship song. The title track “I Have a Song,” is based on Habakkuk 3:17-18, and was aptly the most powerful track on the album, delivering these powerful words in the chorus: “I have a song and I’m singing to my Savior/ Singing to the One who set me free/ I have a song and my heart will ever praise Him/ this world can never take this joy from me/ when all else is gone, I have a song.”

The piano-based “Nothing Can Separate” us, based on Romans 8, contains a few blasts of bass here and there, and even features a choir that make this track about how we will never be separated from Christ very full. It also blends into the traditional “I Stand Amazed,” covered well by Shannon on a level of several keys. “Holy Holy” is very heavenly sounding, based on Revelation 4:8: “Day and night they never stop saying: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.” Following is Shannon’s cover of “’Tis So Sweet to Trust In Jesus,” full of strings, acoustic guitar, and piano.

“Jehovah Shalom,” based on Isaiah 26:3 is a gorgeous, string-based track that speaks of how Jesus is our peace, while the slower “Becoming” is a prayer that we would become so much like Jesus that when people look at us, they see Jesus in everything we do, say, and speak. “Boundless,” a gorgeous, more upbeat track, speaks of how love endures to the end, based on 1 Corinthians 13. “Cling,” a simple track, speaks of how staying close to Jesus, based on Psalm 63:7-8, and is followed by “Psalm 23,” Shannon Wexelberg’s cover of the beloved Psalm. This acoustic track ended Shannon’s beautiful I Have A Song album.

Shannon’s I Have A Song is a very peaceful, Scripture-rich album with beautiful music. Shannon is definitely a talented writer/singer, and this album proves that. If you are a fan of peaceful worship music, then this project is definitely for you!
