Interview: Jay Talks to Cortni About The After Party

Cortni is releasing her debut project The After Party tomorrow! In honor of this project, I had the opportunity to ask Cortni and few questions, and get the scoop inside her new album. My questions for Cortni are in white, followed by her answers in orange. Enjoy!

Your debut project The After Party releases May 10th. Can you tell us a little bit about your excitement over this album, and what you hope will come from it?

I'm very excited about my first CD The After Party. Every song means so much to me and I can't wait to share my heart and allow God to minister through every song. My hope for this album is to get out there and show Christians that you can have fun being a believer and you don’t have to wait to get to heaven to have a party.

What would you say is the overall synopsis of your new album?

We can have fun being Christians. Letting God be our true love. He helps us have sunshine in our life and lead us in everything that we do and go through.

Your first single from the new album, "True Love," is already finding its place on Christian radio stations. Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind this track?

My producer wrote “True Love” for me because he knew my story. Growing up I used to search for things to fill the void inside. In a bad relationships, hanging out with the wrong crowd, doing things I knew I shouldn't have done, when God could have truly filled that void inside. No matter how many times and how many situations I got myself in, God proved that he could fill that emptiness I was feeling so much better than anything here on earth. He's there for me and he is my True Love and this song means more to me than any other song on the album.

4. My favorites from The After Party were "Trophy Man" and "Alone With You." What is your personal favorite from the debut project and why?

"Trophy Man" is my favorite song on the album because it really allows me to be me. I can dance, I can have a great time while helping others see that we don't need a trophy man or woman in our lives. We need someone to allow us to put God first in every situation. A lot of times in my relationships, the guys I dated wanted me to put them first before God. They wanted me to do and be everything for them. That why this song means so much and it also ministers to so many singles because it lets them know that they don't have to settle for less. God will give us the perfect somebody that will be everything to us, but will also let us grow into the people we were created to be. We need to be confident in that.

"Dream Big" is another great track off your The After Party album. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind this track?

Why dream small?? God has everything in control so no matter what you are trying to in life, you can do all things through Christ who can strengthen you. God has your back, and he created you for a reason, so Dream Big!!

Can you tell the inspiration behind "Walls of Glass" as well?

My producer Tre Corley let me hear this song and I just felt I needed to put this song on my album. Russ Taff wrote and recorded this song back in the 80s, and I'm honored to be able to bring the song to a new audience on my album as well.

Your new album has a bit of everything -- mostly teen pop, but also some worship, a touch of blues, and more. What are some of your musical inspirations? What would you say has impacted the sound of your album more than anything else?

Growing up I loved listing to Black Gospel and Kirk Franklin was one of my all time favorites. I also listened to a lot of Beyonce who is also one of my favorite artists of all time. Pop and rock music always influenced me.

Your Facebook page recently showed some pictures from the upcoming music video for "True Love." Can you tell us a little about that experience? What is it like recording your first music video as a debut artist?

At first I was pretty nervous about doing my first music video, but when the cameras started rolling I just tried to show how much the song True Love actually means to me! We started filming around 6am and we didn’t finish until 9pm! It was a long day but I loved every second of it. I had to focus on the song instead of all the camera crew around me, which was a challenge, but also really made me consider all elements of not only what the song means to me, but to anyone who may see the video. I’m so blessed; it was an amazing experience.

Has anything crazy or out of the ordinary happened to you since you began your music career?

Probably the most crazy thing that has happened to me was moving 9 hours away from my family! I was a huge sacrifice and a major stepping stone but I knew God was calling me to move to Tennessee, and it’s been an adventure so far!

I know that you just performed at the Dove Awards "after party." How did you enjoy the Dove Awards and what was that experience like for you?

Every year my family and I try to go to the Dove Awards! I loved watching every performer and it was an honor being there right in the mist of my musical influences!!

What would you say is something that God has placed on your heart to share with the world?

I just want every song to minister to those who are hurting and lost. I want to show the world God's love and compassion for us. I want the world to know that God can be our True Love & direct us in the right way, even when we lose our way!

At the age of 18, what would you say to teenagers out there reading this who feel called to the music industry, and want to know where to start?

For all the teenagers who feel called in the music industry just dream big and know you can do all things thru Christ who strengthens you! Fight for your dream and never give up, even when you feel like its not worth the wait and the work. If God has called you to ministry, it’s for a reason, so just keep working towards your dreams!
