Mark Hall: Your Own Jesus Book Review

In Your Own Jesus by Casting Crowns’ lead-singer Mark Hall, Hall shares a fundamental truth of the gospel: We cannot lean on any other person’s Jesus – we need a Jesus of our own. But why do so many people attend church, hear an inspiring, challenging sermon, determine to change, and leave the church the same? Hall explores this question, showing that the answer is that people are not rooted and grounded in the word of God. In just six chapters, Hall shares many ways that being lukewarm can be reversed, while he combines the challenging message with Casting Crowns’ albums.

Beginning every chapter with a tale to illustrate his point, Hall’s easy-to-read, six chapter book shares simple but powerful ways we can have our own Jesus. First, in chapter one, Hall shares that we cannot come closer to Jesus without learning true forgiveness from God’s perspective. Forgiveness from man’s perspective says “I’ve messed up; God will never forgive me.” God’s forgiveness says, “I forgave you two thousand years ago so that you can come closer to Me.” The way that Hall laid the groundwork for forgiveness was phenomenal, in my opinion. I very much enjoyed reading how Hall laid the groundwork so simply, yet in a way that was so profound.

In chapter two, Mark shares that too many of us fade away slowly because we take counsel from worldly people. Taking his stand based on Psalm 1, Mark shares that heeding Godly counsel will cause us to grow in God, and will help us to not lose our faith between the altar and the door. With the third chapter, Hall shares how obedience is the key that will set us free from being a lukewarm Christian, and how we can apply obedience to our lives. Chapter four,  shares that “the only way for us to walk in the newness of life is to walk obediently in God’s Word. And the only way to walk obediently in God’s Word is to know it.” In chapter five, Hall shares the importance of seeing people through the eyes of God, rather than through the eyes of judgment. Through a graphic story, Hall shares this truth, as well as perfectly illustrating forgiveness and grace. Finally, chapter six seems to summarize several chapters into one, with its message of being one in the Spirit, and not letting barriers (especially those of social class) separate our growth in the body of Christ. Also included in the book are devotionals that provoke heart-deep reflection and help you know whether or not you have your own Jesus.

Mark Hall’s Your Own Jesus is one of the best reads I have had in a long time. Not only is the book easy to read and interesting, it also points out amazing truths from the word of God that many people probably already know, yet do not truly know. I enjoyed the honesty of Hall’s book, and recommend that every Christian book reader get their hands on this book. You will be challenged and inspired as you learn the importance of having a solid faith of your own. Casting Crowns fans in particular will enjoy this book – not only because it is written by the band’s lead singer, but also because Casting Crowns lyrics were spread throughout making for a very interesting read. Just wanted to say thank you for the kind words about the book. I appreciate your thoroughness in detailing it for your readers. I'll let Mark know about it and try to show him your blog sometime. Our third book is scheduled to come out in August with Zondervan. It is entitled "The Well," and is based on the Woman at the Well in John 4. I believe it is Mark's best book yet.

Again, thank you, and keep up the work on your good-looking blog. God bless....
