41st Annual Dove Award Coverage

Who won the 41st annual dove awards? Here are the winners, my original predictions, and my commentaries:

Artist of the Year
Casting Crowns
Casting Crowns

Casting Crowns always wins this category!

Group of the Year
NEEDTOBREATHE
Casting Crowns

Okay, well, I would never have guessed NEEDTOBREATHE for this category, but I’m glad they won it!

New Artist of the Year
Sidewalk Prophets
Sidewalk Prophets or Jonny Diaz

Yay! This is what I voted for.

Male Vocalist of the Year
Brandon Heath
Brandon Heath

This is Brandon’s second year of winning this title, and I was pretty sure he’d take it home again.

Female Vocalist of the Year
Francesca Battistelli
Natalie Grant

Wow! Francesca certainly deserves this award. Natalie always seems to win this award, so it seemed that she would take it home again.

Song of the Year
Tenth Avenue North: “By Your Side”
Tenth Avenue North: “By Your Side”

Everybody knew this would be song of the year, although it is an old song.

Recorded Music Packaging
Jars of Clay: "Long Fall Back To Earth."
Jars of Clay: "Long Fall Back To Earth."

Wow! That was a wild guess, but I really like the packaging for Jars CD.

Pop/Contemporary Album
Jars of Clay: “Long Fall Back to Earth.”
Jeremy Camp: “Speaking Louder Than Before”

Okay, I LOVE Jars of Clay’s CD, but I didn’t think that they would win above Jeremy Camp.

Worship Song of the Year
Jennie Lee Riddle: “Revelation Song”
Every Prayer: Israel Houghton or "I Will Rise": Chris Tomlin

Chris Tomlin always comes home with a large handful of Doves, and I didn’t think it would be any different this year. But I’m glad that Jennie won this award; “Revelation Song” is awesome.

Producer of the Year
Jason Ingram & Rusty Varenkamp
Ian Eskelin or Bernie Herms

Jason & Rusty are great producers- they produced Sixteen Cities new album! I was hoping that either Ian or Bernie would win, though.

Short Form Video
Francesca Battistelli: “Free to Be Me”
Barlowgirl: Beautiful Ending, Brandon Heath: Wait and See, or Skillet: Monster

Wow! None of the three were correct! A big loss here… All three of my predictions are some of my favorite music videos.

Rock/Contemporary Song of the Year
NEEDTOBREATHE: "Lay 'Em Down"
"Can't Take Away"; MIKESCHAIR* or "How He Loves"; Church Music; David Crowder*Band*

“Lay ‘Em Down” is an awesome song, too, but the two that I predicted were played more on radio than NEEDTOBREATHE’s track was.

Pop/Contemporary Song of the Year
TobyMac: "City On Our Knees"
TobyMac: "City On Our Knees"

I knew it! Everybody loves this song!

Contemporary Gospel Record Song of the Year
Israel Houghton: "The Power of One"
Israel Houghton: "The Power of One"

Israel recently won a GRAMMY award, so I thought it was probable that he would walk away with a Dove, too.

Rock/Contemporary Album of the Year
NEEDTOBREATHE: “The Outsiders”

Didn’t really have a prediction for this one; this is a group, though!

Rock Album of the Year
RED: “Innocence & Instinct”
Awake; Skillet

I love RED’s album, but Skillet’s “Awake” album was named the most anticipated album of 2009! Everybody knows that Skillet should have taken this home. RED is another of my favorite bands, though, and I’m glad that they took this award home.

Christmas Album of the Year
Big Daddy Weave: "Christ Has Come"
Big Daddy Weave: "Christ Has Come"

Yes! These guys were the best choice!

Praise & Worship Album
David Crowder: "Church Music"
It Is Well; Kutless

No way! When is Kutless ever going to win an award?

Inspirational Song of the Year
"The Only Hope" by Bebo Norman
"Hosanna"; You Deliver Me; Selah

Aw man…

Rock Recorded Song of the Year
Switchfoot: "Mess of Me"
"Hero"; Awake; Skillet

I suppose this is a good choice, but like I already mentioned, Skillet’s album was named the most anticipated album of 2009. They should have taken home at least one award.

Rap/Hip Hop Song of the Year
Group 1 Crew: "Movin"
Group 1 Crew: "Movin"

Yay! Love Group 1 Crew!

Rap Album of the Year
KJ-52: 52 Television
Five Two Television; KJ-52

This is one of the best hip hop projects I’ve heard yet!

Choral Project
Travis Cottrell: “Jesus Saves Live”
Travis Cottrell-Jesus Saves Live

Yeah! Travis is excellent.

Inspirational Album of the Year
Philips, Craig & Dean: Fearless
Philips, Craig & Dean: Fearless

Great! I was pretty sure this would win, because it contains “Revelation Song.”

Special Event Album of the Year
Glory Revealed II: The Word of God In Worship
Fireproof Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

No way! Fireproof deserves an award!
