Francesca Battistelli "My Paper Heart" review

Francesca Battistelli’s My Paper Heart is a very strong debut. This album is inspired by Francesca’s own story. When she was six years old, she thought she had her entire life figured out. She knew exactly what she wanted to happen and how. But when God got a hold of her life, He changed her and her plans. That is the story behind the first track on the album, “Free to Be Me”. It also speaks of how each one of us is made in God’s image, and we are free to live the way God made us.

Francesca’s first radio hit was “I’m Letting Go”. This song also speaks of letting God control your life, instead of going by your own plans. “Unpredictable” also has the same message, speaking of how God has better plans for you than you can possibly image.

One of my favorite songs on the album is the title track, “My Paper Heart”. This song is so creative both lyrically and musically. The song is about letting God tell you what you are worth, instead of listening to the world’s view: “I had been so terrified to trust/ so many times I’d been reduced to dust/ but You keep showing me/ You’re the safest place to be. “ My absolute favorite song on this album is called, “Beautiful, Beautiful”, speaking of how God’s grace changes us and makes us beautiful.

The one song that I didn’t particularly care for on this album is “Blue Sky”. It was okay, but I didn’t find it very impressive. My Paper Heart also includes a love song to Francesca’s fiancée (now husband) entitled “Someday Soon”. Consider these sweet lyrics for example: “I wanna be the one who does everything with you/ watching stars, washing cars, taking walks, going to the store/ I wanna be the one who gets to change her last name someday/ to something that sounds something more like yours.”

Francesca’s most recent radio hit “Its Your Life” is also a great song on this album. It encourages the listeners to take advantage of your life “to live the way that you believe/ this is your opportunity/ to let your life be one that lights the way.” The last song on this album is called, “Time In Between”. This is an absolutely breathtaking prayer outlining the life of Christ, and thanking Him for coming to this earth.

Overall, I thought this was a great debut. I was very impressed by most of the songs on this album, although I thought a few were just average. I would recommend this album to anyone who loves unique music, as well as those who love slower worship songs.
