Matthew West: Something to Say Review

Matthew West’ s latest record is that of the 2008 Sparrow release, “Something to Say.” This album was shaped by the loss of Matthew’s voice, leaving him with nothing to say. Matthew West recently debuted a documentary on his period of silence with that title. Amazingly, “Something to Say” was written and titled before the loss of Matthew’s voice.

“Something To Say” features two #1s. The first , “You Are Everything,” spent four weeks at the top of music charts. This song speaks of how God is everything good in our lives. “You are everything that I live for/ Everything that I can’t believe is happening/ You’re standing right in front of me/ with arms wide open/ all I know is everyday is filled with hope…” The other chart topper is “The Motions”, which spent thirteen weeks there. This song is just merely looking into our lives and wondering why we live with the status quo, and an encouragement to go farther and really live for Him. “I don’t want to go through the motions/ I don’t want to go one more day without Your all consuming passion inside of me/ I don’t want to spend my whole life asking/ What if I had given everything/ instead of going through the motions.” Another song that is a fan-favorite is a creative pop song entitled “The Center”. It speaks of the attacks we receive when following Christ. “It’s like somebody doesn’t want me to love You/ I must be on to somethin’/ So help me hold on/ help me be strong/ ‘cause I don’t want to move unless you move me/ I wanna know how it feels to be/ standing in the center of Your will for me…” Another fan-favorite is one of the more upbeat songs on the album entitled, “A Friend In the World” that features a special appearance of TobyMac. This song talks of two people, a guy and a girl, who had troubles in life and wanted someone to believe in. You find out in the end of the song that the man was Matthew and the girl later became his wife. The title track, “Something to Say”, is a creative song speaking of how the whole world is waiting to hear what you have to say, so go ahead and speak it. Other songs on this album include, “Life Inside You,” “All the Broken Pieces,” and “Stop the World”.

I love this album by Matthew West, and I love the messages that Matthew shows through his songs. It’s obvious that he has a heart on fire for God. This is definitely a 5 star album. I would suggest this album to fans of Hillsong, Steven Curtis Chapman, and Avalon, as all of the above share a common bond of singing from their hearts, and sharing an inspiring message.
